UN Officials Cite Study That Finds Lockdowns, School Closures KILLING More Children Than COVID
There will be “intergenerational consequences for child growth and development.”

UN officials have pointed to a study that reveals lockdowns and school closures are doing more harm to children than the coronavirus itself, with many more deaths expected to come from the reaction to the outbreak, rather than the pandemic itself.

In a presentation seeking extra funding for coronavirus efforts, UNICEF director Henrietta H Fore said Monday, “The repercussions of the pandemic are causing more harm to children than the disease itself.”

UNICEF nutrition program chief Victor Aguayo noted that the most harm is being done “by having schools closed, by having primary health care services disrupted, by having nutritional programs dysfunctional.”

The officials pointed to a study published in The Lancet that notes “physical distancing, school closures, trade restrictions, and country lockdowns” are worsening global child malnutrition.

The study estimates that an extra 6.7 million children will be at risk, and that lockdowns and other coronavirus responses could lead to more than 10,000 additional child deaths every month.

The UNICEF officials noted that would mean 128,000 more deaths among children within the next year.

    More after the jump...

Losing parents is not good for kids, either.

No, it isn't. But since the mortality rate for parents who have Covid is so low, and the negative effects for children so high, one has to wonder why we would decide to sacrifice children for (extremely) marginally safer parents.

Because people are not that confident that they won't be the one with a bad covid experience.

I understand. And fear is a very real decision driver. But here are the numbers in Florida (simply because I have them handy)...no reason to believe they would be materially different elsewhere.

Most parents of school kids would fall in the below 55 year old category, I think we can agree. If you disagree, we can discuss.

This would mean that at the very worst, 3 out of 1000 would become sick and die. This is 2 more than the average flu virus. Do you think this is worth the added risk to children?

People are poor judges of risk, this is well known. It doesn't matter what the data says. The discussion of voter fraud via mail comes to mind.

So do you believe that the majority of parents should be more concerned with the ill effect that shutting down schools has on children than the chance they will die from Covid?

It's been proven also that it is highly unlikely for children to pass Wuhan-19 to adults.

Well, per the article it appears that it is not the school closures causing the harm so much as the lack of access to primary healthcare and nutritional services.

The leftist effort to keep schools closed is a manifestation of their effort to destroy the economy.

If kids stay home so must their caregivers. So those people cannot work.

They've already managed a 33% reduction of our GDP. Leftists figure Trump cannot be reelected with a destroyed economy regardless of who is responsible. You share a country with people who would destroy your lives if it helped them attain power.
