A range of websites including popular news outlets, ecommerce giants and governmental websites are offline due to an unexplained internet outage, with some reports pointing to a glitch at US-based cloud computing services provider Fastly.

Fastly said it was investigating "the potential impact to performance with our CDN services," according to its website. Most of Fastly's coverage areas were facing "degraded performance", the website showed.

Websites operated by news outlets including The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, Financial Times, the New York Times and Bloomberg News appeared to be down across the globe, while The Guardian said on Twitter that its website and app were being affected by a wider internet outage.

The websites for Amazon and the government of the United Kingdom have also been affected.

Nearly 21,000 Reddit users reported issues with the social media platform, while more than 2,000 users reported problems with Amazon, according to outage monitoring website Downdetector.com.

Websites rumble back to life after Fastly-linked outage

Thousands of government, news and social media websites across the globe were coming back online Tuesday after being hit by a widespread hour-long outage linked to U.S.-based cloud company Fastly Inc (FSLY.N).

High traffic sites including Reddit, Amazon, CNN, Paypal, Spotify, Al Jazeera Media Network and the New York Times were out of commission, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com. They came back up after outages that ranged from a few minutes to around an hour.

Hopefully this was not a hack attack on Fastly that we will not find out about a few months from now about the outage.
