The proposed deal would require Caracas to open talks with political opponents, with the aim of free elections in 2024

Engaging Venezuela, which sits atop some of the world’s largest oil reserves, could serve as a longer-term strategy for the U.S. and European countries scrambling to secure new energy sources.

    Patricia Garip,

The Biden administration is preparing to scale down sanctions on Venezuela’s authoritarian regime to allow Chevron Corp. to resume pumping oil there, paving the way for a potential reopening of U.S. and European markets to oil exports from Venezuela, according to multiple people familiar with the proposal.

In exchange for the significant sanctions relief, the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro would resume long-suspended talks with the country’s opposition to discuss conditions needed to hold free and fair presidential elections in 2024, the people said. The U.S., Venezuela’s government and some Venezuelan opposition figures have also worked out a deal that would free up hundreds of millions of dollars in Venezuelan state funds frozen in American banks to pay for imports of food, medicine and equipment for the country’s battered electricity grid and municipal water systems.

U.S. officials cautioned that the deal could fall through, since it is contingent on Mr. Maduro’s top aides resuming talks with the opposition in good faith.

If the deal goes through and Chevron, along with U.S. oil service companies, are allowed to work in Venezuela again, it would put only a limited amount of new oil on the world market in the short term.

Lol, same old US oil whore that tries to get into the panties of oil rich nations, regardless of how abhorrently they spoke of such country just moments ago. When the big oil execs are calling then the damn white house must pick up. As said before, the US is a funny nation that constantly flips its opinion based on today's needs of the elites. No wonder, of course, given how emotional the overall population is.

I love how the media largely ignores the fact that our current administration has killed tens of thousands of US jobs, sent gas prices soaring while draining the SPR and then wants to start dealing with dictators in authoritarian regimes to fix the problem they created.

And... we're draining the SPR at a rate of 1M barrels per day. When the next piece of mideast instability hits - and it will - the emergency reserve won't be there to keep our gasoline from going through the roof.

    Is anyone paying attention here?

yeah, MBS in Saudi/the mideast decided to turn off the tap because Kushner called to cash in a favor ahead of the midterms.

MBS should remember the only reason he's not in shackles is due to sleepy Joe's mercy.

  6. Venezuela has dignity and morale, not so the US... :)

Now that is humbug and you know it.

  8. Why humbug?
For example Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia, El Slavador are countries with true dignity I would say, their economic development is blocked by the US (with sanctions, threats & blackmailings), b/c US is so strong and can immorally do it w/o fearing any consequences, still these small, poor countries have kept their dignity by resisting the hegemon BigBorther USA.

Those lives lived are not a depiction of humbleness nor dignity. They are raking of corruption, support for terrorism, targeted killings, drug and human trafficking at the highest government levels. And we are not even getting into politics here...

  10. Man, are you so naive? Don't believe the propaganda lies of the US and its vassals, and the poodle :D
The US is at least 1000 times more criminal & corrupt than any other country on Earth.
They call it for example "donation", but it's nothing but "legalized" corruption!... :)
Targeted killings, even targeted mass killings, are a specialty of the US, nowadays with US killer drones...

Forget the NGOs who compile such lists of corrupt countries: they get paid by the US... :)
