TWS > Monitor > Favorite - what are the Red, Green color codes?

Discussion in 'Interactive Brokers' started by salamanderforex, Feb 10, 2021.

  1. Hi,

Generally, it looks like RED is showing a value decrease and GREEN is showing a value increase for a security on TWS > Monitor > Favorites window but I am puzzled by some colors I see.

CHANGE% column which shows percentage change since last reset (end of day for example) shows RED if a security or forex has gone down since. Why wouldn't LAST column also show RED in this case? Below is a picture showing LAST column in various opposite states:

    A) LAST is black / CHANGE % is RED (rows 1, 2)
    B) LAST is red / CHANGE % is GREEN (rows 3, 4, 5)
    C) LAST is black / CHANGE % is GREEN (rows 6, 8, 9)

And then we have good one like:
LAST is GREEN / CHANGE % is GREEN (row 7)
    or
LAST is GRED / CHANGE % is RED (not shown in this picture but happens)

What do these colors in LAST mean? Why the discrepancy?

Uptick, downtick, and sametick? Just a guess.

  3. Good guess but sametick doesn't hold for sure because I see price changes and it still stays with black background (I am assuming you mean RED is downtick, GREEN is uptick, and BLACK is sametick). So, if sametick is not correct maybe uptick and downtick is not either???

For as big as IB is, don't they have a darn user manual for their software? It's outrageous people have so much trouble with the interface.

  5. This is not explained there.

IB has tons of documentation and I was able to answer lots of questions just pointing people to docs.
But the OP doesn’t understand basic terms like the difference between the current price and “last”, so if documentation wold explain this then he wouldn’t understand what is a trade. If the documentation would explain the trade then he wouldn’t understand something else. You can’t replace basic knowledge with documentation for software that requires basic knowledge.

  7. Waste of time.

You can try to answer the original question.

  8. If I recall correctly is "change %" calculated based on the close price of the previous trading day. Whereas the background color in "last" is based on intraday price movement.
If you hover your mouse over "last" or "change %" don't you get a pop-up window with explanation?

  9. It doesn't talk about my questions (see original post about colors). Only explains that if there is a "C" it is showing it's previous days closing price and "H" is halt. No talk about color codes.

Also, I see these extra shapes (circles, tilted squares, and squares of white, green, red, gray, yellow) and those are not explained fully either. I don't see them on all securities and only some. I circled 5 more mysteries added to my list here. These are to be indicators of uptick/downtick according to the info (mouse over tooltip) but there are too many shapes and colors and uptick/downtick and market subscriptions are only 3 options while I got 6 or 7 varieties of shapes and times that by 5 colors. Also, these don't correspond to LAST column colors (see my original post) so if these are uptick/downtick color then what are LAST column colors?

  10. There is so much confusion in the colour codes. When I use some other broker, they use different colour codes. Even I am looking for a way that can help me determine how to make use of these colour codes in my trading.
