TWS: Is it possible to chart a linked symbol's underlying?

  1. I'm a first-time TWS user on the free trial -- sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but I didn't find any guidance in the user guide nor a Google search.

I currently have OptionTrader on the right half of my screen, and I'm trying to see if I can chart the underlying on the left. Screenshot attached:

It looks fine in this screenshot, but say I want to start placing an order on one of the options on the chain. I click it, and a pending order pops up under "Orders", which is fine.

But instantly, the chart updates to the chart of the option, rather than the chart of the underlying (TSLA stock). I understand that this is because OptionTrader and the Chart are both linked (to Group 1).

That said, is there a way to have the left chart be "forced" to show only the underlying? This would be really convenient, so I could just switch among various tickers, see the stock chart, and still be able to click around on the options chain.

Not sure myself, but the purpose of the grouping is to make sure the two panels are linked, so showing different things in each panel for the same group would defeat the purpose of those groups.
The way I currently handle this, is by having two different charts, each linked to a different group. Then I manually select the stock/ticker for the panel/group that isn't linked to my options chain:

  3. Thanks for describing your workflow, that kind of makes sense. I was hoping TWS would be able to do what I had in mind, though. I'll keep tinkering, I guess. I can't be the only one who wants do do something like:

    1. Enter a stock ticker symbol
    2. See its options chain and stock chart
    3. Be able to left-click on the options chain and start entering orders without affecting anything else

Agree. Just to clarify my setup, all your 3 points are handled automatically for me, but I have to repeat #1 twice in two different groups/panels.

  5. @guru I actually figured it out just now.

So I have a Chart, an Options Chain, a Watchlist, and Order Entry.

Chart, Options Chain, and Watchlist are all grouped to the same group. Order Entry sits there on its own.

Click on a ticker from the Watchlist, and it'll update the Chart and Options Chain. Click on the bid/ask for one of the options (do not click in the strike price column) and it will send it to the Order Entry.

That's all there is to it, unless I'm missing something... I guess it was possible after all!
