Trump is phasing out FEMA. I think this is a great idea, seriously. States should handle their own emergency disasters. I don’t know why he’s waiting until this hurricane season though. There’s billions in DOGE savings if they cut it today.
Let’s face facts. You are mostly on ur own if a hurricane damages your home. After Hurricane Andrew things flipped. In Andrew houses were getting whole roof replaced for a couple of missing tiles. FEMA or no FEMA. Insurance companies shouldn’t be able to write plolicies they can’t pay out.
FEMA was formed because states were unable to pay for their reconstruction from natural disasters. Nor did they have the resources to scale a large emergency response involving an entire region (multi-state) area of the country. There have been storms and other natural disasters historically that cost more to recover from than a state’s entire budget for a decade.
They would have to raise taxes to 100% of all personal and business income even to create a partial emergency coverage fund. I'm sure the red states will love this.
It’s part of trumps mandate that these people voted for. They voted because they said FEMA was stealing their stuff. Texas has a point. Why are they burdened with the cost of illegals? Why is NY burdened with the cost of Florida hurricanes?
if insurance takes in all these premiums they should take the burden off of FEMA and the State. If not then think of something better.
Each state will now be responsible for its own prayers. According to Trump officials, “This puts disaster response back in God’s hands, where it belongs.” “Frankly, FEMA was very unfair to me. But God? God’s been tremendous.”
Insurance companies are unwilling to insure many business, properties, homes, etc. Take a look at the problems with insurance in Florida where no insurance company will step up to provide policies on many properties. The issue is even worse when it comes to insuring public sector items such as roads, water plants. waste treatment plants, etc. -- most are not insured.
