One big takeaway is that Trump seems to acknowledge exactly what his pledge to make Mexico pay for the border wall was — a hollow promise meant to rile up the base.

At one point in his call with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, Trump even acknowledges that the wall is “the least important thing we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important.”

You hear that, Trump supporters? That applause line that Trump used with such gusto for basically his entire campaign — “Build that wall,” and “Who's going to pay for it? (Crowd response: MEXICO!)"? It was all vote-bait, red meat for voters who didn't know that it was completely impractical and would never happen. And within his first days in office — this call took place on Jan. 27, a week after Trump's inauguration — Trump was already throwing in the towel on it on a call with the Mexican president.

  2. ‘U need 2 work on your begging skills’: Internet rips Trump’s pathetic wall plea to Mexican president

After leaked transcripts revealed that President Donald Trump begged Mexican President Peña Nieto to stop saying that Mexico won’t pay for Trump’s border wall, Twitter exploded in mockery and disgust.

Users blasted Trump’s followers for their uncritical acceptance of everything Trump says while others suggested this is just the White House’s pattern — to float extravagant lies, get caught and then re-spin the facts to attack the media or “leakers.”

GOPer baffles CNN hosts by denying Trump campaign promise: ‘The wall is a metaphor for border security’

Rep. Francis Rooney (R-FL) asserted on Thursday that no one thought President Donald Trump meant that Mexico would pay for a border wall when he repeatedly promised it during the 2016 campaign.

During an interview on CNN, host Poppy Harlow noted that The Washington Post had recently obtained a transcript of Trump’s conversation with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. Trump admitted during the call that the wall was the “the least important thing we are talking about.”

“I don’t think anyone during the campaign seriously thought that Mexico was going to pay for that wall,” Rooney opined. “We all believe that the wall is a metaphor for border security.”

CNN co-host John Berman reminded the congressman that Trump made the promise “at every rally.”

“These campaigns are full of all kinds of comments, promises, commitments, expressions, vitriolic diatribe,” Rooney said. “And once the campaign is over, it’s time to move on to governing.”

“Time to not implement what you promised?” Berman pressed. “I’m just confused how you chalk this up to, ‘Yes, this is something he said but no one believed it.'”

“There have been a lot of things that people have said during campaigns that that turned out not to be believed later,” Rooney replied.

“Hold on, Congressman,” Harlow interrupted. “He said it after the campaign. I mean, he said it in the White House.”

“I don’t think anyone really thought that the Mexicans were going to pay for the wall,” Rooney insisted. “President Trump was not a professional politician.”

Trump: You're not going to pay for the wall, but will you at least you stop SAYING that?
    Nieto: No, I won't.
Trump: PLEASE? This is very embarrassing for me.
    Nieto: Click. Dial tone.

Mexoco is already paying. The devaluation of their peso since Trump won cost them way more.

If Mexico is paying for the wall, then why did Trump shut the government down because he wants the taxpayers to pay for it?

Oh so he shut down the government for no reason then. LOL what an absolute fuktard
