TQQQ

Discussion in 'ETFs' started by lifelonglearner, Jan 8, 2025.

  1. TQQQ was trading at less than a dollar when it was started in 2010. If I had invested 10k and bought 10,000 shares, I would be sitting on 800k now as it is trading at 80 today.

Compared to that, QQQ was trading at $50 in 2010 and now it’s at 515. That same $10,000 would have bought me 200 shares in 2010 and I would be sitting on &103,000 gain now.

Clearly, TQQQ is a winner. Am I missing something?

nothing you missed unless there is a massive recession like 2009, check it’s performance in 2022, from 82-17

  3. According to ChatGPT,
    • Not suitable for long-term holding due to compounding and leverage decay.

I don’t see any decay even after 15 years.

    The average drawdown is 19%
    Current DD is 13%

TQQQ could be lagging QQQ by 1 basis point on a daily risk adjusted basis.

Similarly, there are stocks that started at say $100.
Now it is worth 1 cent.
That same $10,000 investment would be worth at ~ $1

  6. TQQQ mostly holds total return swaps. If QQQ goes up you will make money, but if it's flat or down you will lose money. TQQQ's historical return is incredibly high since inception, but going forward you're more likely to lose money given the current state of tech valuations.

only buy 3x at bear market, then sell covered calls going up. i loaded up in q3 2022 between 20-25, nice return for sure but i have $50 short calls and will roll up slowly with 25% increment.

Hindsight is always 20/20. If you bought NVDA back then, it was $0.3 a share and it is now $140.

What am I missing? Should have bought NVDA then.

When I backtested every historical stock price data, I always made money, it was so easy.

I do have very small positions in NVDA and TQQQ, for fun, my lottery tickets.

It's so much easier to trade on the left side of the chart. :)

If you're feeling really lucky you should buy FNGU instead. I believe it is up 13X since January 2023. It makes TQQQ look like a turtle. Of course the 2022 drawdown was a mere 93%.

I was in the 2X MSTR ETF (MSTX) and at the peak I was up 12X, of course it soon crashed after that day.
