Anyone looking to obtain a job at Tourbillion Capital Partners will have one additional step in the interview process: A personality test conducted by CIA interrogators.

During the Milken Institute’s Global Conference, Tourbillion’s Jason Karp, said that all potential hires take the test.

"We actually administer a three-step personality exam that's conducted by a former CIA interrogator," Karp told hedge fund recruiter Ilana Weinstein, the founder of IDW Group. According to Karp, the test is a valuable way to identify both positive traits and potential red flags. Karp got the idea after working at SAC Capital.

The most important trait Karp seeks in a personality test if a metric known as “Openness to change.” This signifies an analyst’s ability to change his or her mind when conflicting information emerges.

" I found that ['openness to change'] combined with a variable that's in psychology called 'grit', in our business we call it 'resilience', those are the two factors we search for the most," he said.

Karp says that his fund uses the test to lump candidates into three distinct categories: Excellent Candidate, Dangerous Candidate, and Nuisance Candidate.

Excellent Candidates are defined as individuals with a high metric for openness to change, high levels of resilience, and a desire to win.

Karp launched Tourbillon in 2012. Prior to founding the fund, he was the co-chief investment officer at Carlson Capital and a portfolio manager at CR Intrinsic, a subsidiary of Cohen's SAC Capital Advisors.
