So in calm seas one of the navy's most sophisticated boats collides with a slow moving container ship.

Do they even train the captains of these boats? Political appointments?

This is one captain that is going to lose his job and be court martialed. His career is over. There is no excuse for this collision, and the top officer on the ship is always responsible.

Naval officers are highly trained and are not political appointees.

The captain was asleep in his quarters when this happened early in the AM hours.

  4. Apparently somebody else was asleep at the wheel. Don't these warships have like, "radar"?

He still is responsible for the entire situation and the ship. Being asleep in his quarters will not save him being dismissed after a court martial.

Thats not right imo .Only the person who was on duty and in charge should be responsible.

That is not how military regulations work in naval command. The captain of the ship is ultimately responsible under all circumstances. If he failed to train his officers and crew adequately to handle their duties and avoid a collision, the captain is responsible. The career of this naval captain is over.

Don't doubt its true.I just think its not right to lose a career over another dipshit being asleep at the wheel.

Generally speaking, yes. But there have been exceptions based on circumstance.
