WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Top U.S. cybersecurity official Christopher Krebs, who worked on protecting the election from hackers but drew the ire of the Trump White House over efforts to debunk disinformation, has told associates he expects to be fired, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Krebs, who heads the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), did not return messages seeking comment. CISA and the White House declined comment.

Separately, Bryan Ware, assistant director for cybersecurity at CISA, confirmed to Reuters that he had handed in his resignation on Thursday. Ware did not provide details, but a U.S. official familiar with his matter said the White House asked for Ware’s resignation earlier this week.

The departure is part of the churn in the administration since Republican President Donald Trump was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden in last week’s election, raising concerns about the transition to the president-elect who would take office on Jan. 20. Trump, who has yet to concede and has repeatedly made unsubstantiated claims of electoral fraud, fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper and has installed loyalists in top positions at the Pentagon.

Krebs has drawn praise from both Democrats and Republicans for his handling of the election, which generally ran smoothly despite persistent fears that foreign hackers might try to undermine the vote.

But he drew the ire of the Trump White House over a website run by CISA dubbed “Rumor Control” which debunks misinformation about the election, according to the three people familiar with the matter.

White House officials have asked for content to be edited or removed which pushed back against numerous false claims about the election, including that Democrats are behind a mass election fraud scheme. CISA officials have chosen not to delete accurate information.

In particular, one person said, the White House was angry about a CISA post rejecting a conspiracy theory that falsely claims an intelligence agency supercomputer and program, purportedly named Hammer and Scorecard, could have flipped votes nationally. No such system exists, according to Krebs, election security experts and former U.S. officials.

On Twitter, U.S. Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, wrote: “Chris Krebs has done a great job protecting our elections. He is one of the few people in this Administration respected by everyone on both sides of the aisle. There is no possible justification to remove him from office. None.”

Krebs has steadily shot down rumors of fraud in recent days, including retweeting leading election security expert Matt Blaze, who for years has warned of specific vulnerabilities in election gear, when the professor wrote that “no serious evidence has yet been found or presented that suggests that the 2020 election outcome in any state has been altered through technical exploitation.”

Gregory Crabb, chief information security officer for the U.S. Postal Service, which was also under pressure over misinformation about mail-in ballots, said: “From my view on the election frontlines, Krebs was a great partner and deserves accolades for his work.”

Anybody who "expects to be fired" is purposely trying to go against their boss.

People that just do their job and are not trying to make some kind of "point" don't say, I expect to be fired. that doesn't even make any sense.

Did this dumb fuck go back to every election in US history and somehow compare to this election and come up with some scientific conclusion that it was the most secure ever?

    What an asshole.

Krebs confirms biggest domestic threat is Donnie himself

Ousted Trump cybersecurity director debunks 2020 election rumors
Fired CISA director Chris Krebs told 60 Minutes that domestic disinformation around the 2020 election posed a greater risk than foreign

"We had to get facts out there," Krebs said. "The unfortunate thing is that the caller was inside the house. The domestic disinformation was what ultimately materialized, much more so than any sort of foreign disinformation."

"I think that we should be celebrating the successes of making the 2020 election the most secure election in modern history," Krebs said to Pelley. "I think that the administration deserves credit. I think that President Trump's administration deserves credit for securing the 2020 election."

After the election, Krebs said his team briefed members of congress about false claims that foreign governments were manipulating voting machines and flipping votes.

Krebs called the narrative "nonsense" and told 60 Minutes "it just didn't match up with reality."

Mr. Trump, his personal attorney Rudolph Giuliani, and recently separated counsel Sidney Powell continue to trumpet the unsubstantiated claims.

"They're false," Krebs said about comments Powell made at a November 19 press conference. "They're nonsense. It's disinformation. It's undermining confidence in our election. It's undermining confidence in our democracy. And I pledged an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution, and I see this as an attack on democracy, an attack on the Constitution. This upsets me greatly."

“There is no foreign power that is flipping votes. There’s no domestic actor flipping votes. I did it right. We did it right,” Krebs told CBS News’s Scott Pelley on “60 Minutes.” “This was a secure election.”

Trump Lawyer: Former DHS Senior Official Should Be Executed
During Newsmax call-in Joe diGenova said Chris Krebs should be put to death.
    https://thebulwark.com/trump-lawyer-dhs-whistleblower-should-be-executed/

On Monday President Trump’s campaign lawyer and former U.S. Attorney Joe diGenova said that fired Trump cybersecurity chief Chris Krebs should be executed for saying that the election was the “most secure in United States history.”

DiGenova, appearing on the Howie Carr show, which simulcasts on Newsmax, took aim at Krebs as an aside during a wheels-off segment full of false claims about how the United States election had been rigged.

“Anybody who thinks that this election went well, like that idiot Krebs who used to be the head of cybersecurity [for Trump]. That guy is a class A moron. He should be drawn and quartered. Taken out at dawn and shot,” diGenova said.

This is not just a random Parler troll trying to get attention. This is an attorney speaking on behalf of the President of the United States’
re-election campaign. And while it may read like a macabre joke, the direct nature of diGenova’s comments make it impossible to interpret as anything other than a real wish/threat against a public servant for offering truthful testimony.

Carr responded to the statement with an awkward pause and a laugh and then changed the subject. Some shit is so weird that it even makes Newsmax people uncomfortable.

DiGenova’s execution wishcasting comes on the heels of a Krebs interview with 60 Minutes in which he debunked the Trump team’s outlandish and conspiratorial claims about the election. Krebs is a lifelong Republican who Trump put in charge of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which had oversight of election security. (Trump fired Krebs via tweet.)

In addition to threatening Krebs, over the course of the interview diGenova made ominous and false suggestions about “circuit breakers” shutting down on election night in multiple states, which allowed for vote fraud; millions of votes showing up in dump trucks, tow trucks, and vans without detection; and he called on state legislatures to have the “cojones” to overturn the results of the election.

In other words: Just a normal day for Elite Strike Force.

Update 8:05 P.M. John Whitehouse at Media Matters obtained the video of the exchange, you can watch it here.
