Think or Swim for scalping stocks. ...what am I missing?

Discussion in 'Trading' started by David Donner, Mar 28, 2024.

  1. For decades there has always been a chunk of people who say they love scalping stocks & trading equities on Think or Swim.

I have always found it INCREDIBLY clunky vs "standard" trading packages with Level II quotes, T&S, charting, etc, etc.

TOS can do each one of those, I suppose, but it seems like so much getting in the way & so much clicking around.

So I can put this to rest in my head after all these years, does anyone here use TOS for scalping stocks? If so, what do you find advantageous about it?

    Thanks.

I do not use Thinkorswim, so I do not know if you should use it or not

1.But Falcon Trading System www.tradingcomputers.com has a BLOG, that has an article about how to speed up/ make the platform *Thinkorswim* faster.

2.There is a youtube *TradingwithTim* he is very aktive with scalping using Thinkorswim.

Besides that Lightspeed, DAS, Sterling or RealTick are good tradings platforms.

    Hope it helps

Nice list, we offer all four. DAS, just for larger customers looking to short small cap stocks.

I have a Roth with TOS and will occasionally take a swing trade or a longer term investment, but I will never actively "trade" through them.

But I've found it to be the most versatile charting platform out there for my style of active day trading.

Maybe that's what others are referring to when they say they are using it.

How do you normally scalp? TOS does provide a ladder with customizable OCO templates. Watch this video.

  7. People still read the Level 2/TOS and scalp profitably even with PFOF and Citadel controlling most of the market making? News to me.

I do not know how many people there are using TOS scalping. I have never used TOS.

But, there is a youtuber *TradingwithTim* and he is very active. Tim says he made money because of no comisions *Order flow to Citadel*.

But, I do not know, and I do not realy care

  9. I actually meant to write T&S, not TOS, my bad.

  10. Hi David,

I've used ThinkOrSwim for many years without any problems and have primarily traded using daily, 2 minute and 3 minute charts. My intraday short-time frame trading is in futures, though, not stocks.

I've found it easy to code new indicators and strategies plus complex stock scanners in TOS and I like it a lot for that reason.

Constructing complex orders is not as flexible as with Ninjatrader and some other brokers, but one can still create complex orders with multiple stop and limit orders attached and with One Triggers All, One Cancels the Other, etc. requirements. All of my orders have multiple instructions inserted into them from the beginning and the numbers and price distances are preset so I don't have to try to adjust them quickly when I trade intraday.

Just in case this might be an issue for you, would you click on the gear symbol that says "Setup" at the top of the main program page and then look at "Active Trader" and "System". Under Active Trader the AT order submission rate limit should say 0 ms and under System it should say "Real-time (no delay)". Be sure to check the other categories in the Setup menu also to be sure they're set the way you want them.

    Good luck to you.
