It kills me to have to take my vehicle for an oil change. I've been blue collar all of my life. I've always changed my own oil. It was simple maintenance and I enjoyed it. But as I've aged, I am Less agile Less limber Less flexible... So I've resigned myself to accepting having even simple maintenance done. I took my vehicle to a new place today, Take 5. They told me to start my engine, can you guess what they forgot to do? They forgot to put the new oil in the engine. They frantically told me to shut it off. Inexcusable.
I get it, but 67 here and I think you can still do it without too much pain. Get a cheap Harbor Freight floor jack, jack stand and oil drain pan, funnel and pile of rags. Get it safely lifted up and makes things much easier. My Toyotas have cup-style filter covers and use cartridge type filters, so takes special socket. Little more of a pain than spin on style but NBD. That stuff will pay for itself in not too much time and you'll know it is done right.
Ramps and a Fumoto valve makes it a breeze. There are many similar products now. Some have quick connects. I used to change the oil on my 1972 Lotus every 2000 miles to be as kind as possible to it. I had a similar thing. I'd just put the oil in the main car.
Very cool, never knew these existed. I ordered one for our Honda van and will give it a try. After I give it a try I will probably order for our other vehicles.
There are several choices, clearance is important, you don't want it whacked by a speed bump but I never had a problem and the Lotus was fairly low. Stahlbus Oil Drain Valves are the quick-connect to a tube one. A truck I had in Africa had a standard ball valve with a yellow handle welded into the sump by somebody. It's a pleasure to change oil with one.
Brings back memory lane. Bought an almost new Ferrari Daytona in 1973 from a developer in San Francisco, drove it back to Houston and blew the engine at arrival. The gauges in the car didn’t work (typical of Ferraris at the time) and I hadn’t checked the oil. Shit happens.
