The west should expect a massive influx of HK refugees

If only we had a leader that was tough on human rights abuses and could disuade a superpower....tsk, tsk...

Even when the U.K. gave Hong Kong to China they made the U.S. and other countries very aware that "this was a U.K. issue" and to butt out. So we have.

There was a 100 year lease which ended in 1999. China would have responded by starving HK out (literally). They were not going to have two Taiwans.

So you can put it like that if you want but would you have done?

China had many chances to strong arm HK in the last 20 years, its not a coincidence they do it when Trump is in power.

  4. Exactly. Plus we only get involved when there are natural resources to steal or a foreign leader to overthrow who doesn't have US interests in mind or when a foreign country decides to outsource its military and hires us.

I'm sure they'll make Biden very aware that China violated the terms of the lease end negotiations.

Brexit was a trial run by Bannon and others to make Trump happen. A Frankenstein experiment in gaslighting.

Weakening the West has a consequence and HK is part of that. Get used to China doing a lot more of whatever the fuck it wants to.

Hong Kong is guided by the "1985 Sino-British joint declaration - a legally binding agreement which set out how certain freedoms would be protected for the 50 years after China assumed sovereignty in 1997". Nothing to do with the 100 year lease. At the time this agreement was made - the U.K. stated that other western nations should butt out. Many including the U.S. were opposed to the agreement at the time. So in retrospect - this is the U.K.'s problem to sort out now. They are doing it by offering the 2.6 Million British National Overseas Passport holders and families in Hong Kong the right to go to the U.K. for five years and be allowed to apply for U.K. citizenship.

"The PM said Tuesday's passing of a new security law by the Hong Kong authorities was a "clear and serious breach" of the 1985 Sino-British joint declaration - a legally binding agreement which set out how certain freedoms would be protected for the 50 years after China assumed sovereignty in 1997."

Sorry 1997, I was actually in an episode of TV cop show filmed there in 1996, brain fart.

Nothing to do with the lease? Are you fucking slow today also? The only reason for the agreement was the lease's clock running out.

History by googling some snippet.. I lived in the Irish/UK relm all this time period. It was not stuff people in the States had much to any attention on, big deal in the UK.

Everyone understood when the lease expired the clock was ticking. Agreements become nothing once they can't be enforced.

China has to somewhat behave the world is it's customer but they won't get any pushback from an increasingly gaslit population. Bad is good, 2+2=5 westerners. I'd strangle Bannon for what he had done.
