the name that is above every name - Iēsous Jesus

  1. Why is our Lord’s name so powerful? What does the name Jesus mean?

    yasha =rescue or save
    Yahweh shortened to Ya

The name Jesus, announced to Joseph and Mary through the angels (Matthew 1:21; Luke 1:31), means “Yahweh saves” or “Yahweh is salvation.” Transliterated from Hebrew and Aramaic, the name is Yeshua. This word is a combination of Ya, an abbreviation for Yahweh, the name of Israel’s God (Exodus 3:14); and the verb yasha, meaning “rescue,” “deliver,” or “save.”

The English spelling of the Hebrew Yeshua is Joshua. But when translated from Hebrew into Koine Greek, the original language of the New Testament, the name Yeshua becomes Iēsous. In English, Iēsous becomes Jesus. Thus, Yeshua and, correspondingly, Joshua and Jesus mean “Yahweh saves” or “the Lord is salvation.”

The name Jesus was quite popular in first-century Judea. For this reason, our Lord was often called “Jesus of Nazareth,” distinguishing Him by His childhood home, the town of Nazareth in Galilee (Matthew 21:11; Mark 1:24; Luke 18:37; John 1:45; John 19:19; Acts 2:22). Despite its commonness, the name Jesus is remarkably significant. Jesus was sent by God for a particular purpose, and His personal name bears witness to that mission. Just as the Yeshua/Joshua in the Old Testament led his people to victory over the Canaanites, the Yeshua/Jesus in the New Testament led His people to victory over sin and their spiritual enemies.

If ever a name was packed with significance, it is the name Jesus. Scripture says Jesus has been given “the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow—in heaven and on earth and under the earth” (Philippians 2:9–10, CSB).

    ------------------
Jesus (/ˈdʒiːzəs/) is a masculine given name derived from Iēsous (Ἰησοῦς; Iesus in Classical Latin) the Ancient Greek form of the Hebrew name Yeshua (ישוע).[1][2] As its roots lie in the name Isho in Aramaic and Yeshua in Hebrew, it is etymologically related to another biblical name, Joshua.[3]

  2. The vocative form Jesu, from Latin Iesu, was commonly used in religious texts and prayers during the Middle Ages, particularly in England, but gradually declined in usage as the English language evolved.

Jesus is usually not used as a given name in the English-speaking world, while its counterparts have had longstanding popularity among people with other language backgrounds, such as the Spanish Jesús.

70 Christians Beheaded in Church: What We Know
    Published Feb 20, 2025

Seventy decapitated bodies have been discovered in a church in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to Open Doors, which supports persecuted Christians around the world.

An Islamist group linked to Islamic State called the AFD are feared to have beheaded the victims with machetes.

    What To Know
The 70 decapitated bodies were discovered in a Protestant church in the town of Kasanga, in the Lubero Territory in the province of North Kivu toward the end of last week, according to Open Doors.

No group has taken responsibility for the atrocity, but Open Doors, and several other organizations, have accused the AFD of the murders, citing "field sources." The victims are believed to have been taken hostage a few days before they were killed.

Military administrator Alain Kiwewa for the Lubero Territory said he was investigating the incident, Pan-African news agency Agence de Presse Africaine reported.

"Local sources suspect the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist group of Ugandan origin affiliated with the Islamic State, as well as local armed groups of being responsible for the massacre. These groups have maintained a climate of terror in the region for several months," the agency said.

It said the victims, who had been "tied up and decapitated with knives," had been kidnapped on February 12.

American conservative anti-abortion activity Lila Rose posted on X: "Horrific. 70 Christians were brutally beheaded by an Islamist group inside a church in the Democratic Republic of Congo Where's the media outrage? Pray for persecuted Christians."

Social media account "Libs of TikTok" also posted about it with the caption: "Seventy Christians were found beheaded in a church in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They were reportedly hostages of the Islamist group ADF—an ISIS affiliate Why isn't the MSM (mainstream media) covering this story??"

    What People Are Saying
The Hungarian State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians Tristan Azbej said: "Horrified to learn about the 70 Christian martyrs beheaded by terrorists in a church in Kasanga, DRC. Hungary stands in solidarity with the persecuted Christians BUT we need more the world needs to recognize and act against Christian persecution."

Open Doors' legal expert for the work in sub-Saharan Africa John Samuel said: "Open Doors strongly condemns this heinous act of violence against civilians and calls upon civil societies, governments and international organizations to prioritize civilian protection in eastern DRC where armed groups, such as the ADF, are operating."

An elder of the Evangelical Community in Central Africa said: "We don't know what to do or how to pray. There have been too many massacres. May God's will be done."
