All those companies in mid-town can move into 4 story wood built buildings in Queens. ____________________ Bill de Blasio says Green New Deal will ban ‘inefficient’ steel and glass skyscrapers If the Big Apple is to become the Green Apple, it will have to ban the steel and glass towers that form its signature skyline, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio. De Blasio, speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” said that city’s most iconic structures – the tall skyscrapers seen from miles away – are the “biggest source of emissions” in New York City. The drastic change, and a switch to only renewable energy within five years, are necessary for Gotham to embrace the Green New Deal, de Blasio said. “We are putting clear, strong mandates” to lower emissions, he said, warning property owners will face massive fines unless buildings are retrofitted. “The first of any major city on the Earth to say to building owners, ‘you've got to clean up your act, you've got to retrofit, you've got to save energy,’” he said. “If you don’t do it by 2030 there will be serious fines, as high as $1 million or more for the biggest buildings.” He continued: “We’re going to ban the classic glass and steel skyscrapers, which are incredibly inefficient. If someone wants to build one of those things they can take a whole lot of steps to make it energy efficient, but we’re not going to allow what we used to see in the past. De Blasio said private building owners will be required to slash their emissions by 30 percent by 2030. In the same conversation that he was touting renewable energy and reducing emissions, de Blasio also defended his use of a gas-guzzling SUV for his daily 11-mile trips from Gracie Mansion to his Brooklyn gym. “Let’s make clear, this is just a part of my life,” he said. “I come from that neighborhood in Brooklyn. That’s my home. I go there on a regular basis to stay connected to where I come from and not be in a bubble that I think for a lot of politicians is a huge problem.” (LOL) The Green New Deal, championed by fellow New Yorker, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Washington, is a radical measure that called for a massive overhaul of the nation’s economy and energy use to cut emissions. The deal calls for the U.S. to shift away from fossil fuels such as oil and coal and replace them with renewable sources such as wind and solar power. It also calls for the virtual elimination of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming by 2030. It is estimated to cost up to $93 trillion, or $600,000 per household, according to studies. Republicans have railed against the proposal, saying it would devastate the economy and trigger massive tax increases. A test vote on the proposal recently failed in the Senatewith no senator voting to begin debate on the legislation. New York City’s Green New Deal meets that reality head on,” he said. “We are confronting the same interests that created the climate crisis and deepened inequality. There’s no time to waste. We’re taking action now, before it’s too late.” Under his Green New Deal, de Blasio said the city is committing to carbon neutrality by 2050 and 100 percent clean electricity, including hydropower. It's like the northeast and California are in a contest to see who can destroy their economies the fastest. As it is, half of New Jersey and NY are looking to move to NC or Florida. When they get there, they will vote for pols advocating the exact policies that made their former homes unlivable.
Or simply go across the river. Who the hell wants to pay that fucktarded level of rent NYC charges anyway when NJ and Conn are going to whore out to bring those people over. I moved my company out of NYC many years ago because the rent is just money thrown in the garbage for living in a city that often feels like garbage. I think NYC is in for a rude awakening when people realize with technology they can be anywhere or open a company in the suburbs and still be connected to global commerce at 1/5th the overhead cost.
So they want more energy efficient buildings. Why is this a problem? You want a new building in glass, build it to new code. Hell, right wing tradies love code.
Well to be fair, "science" has told us that taxes will make climate change go away. Makes civilized society go away too. Small price to pay.
I believe the major focus is on NEW buildings to be built. Requiring new buildings in NYC to adhere to mroe energy efficient guidelines. As for existing buildings he mentioned retrofitting by 2030 and it is not clear what is meant there. It could mean maybe energy efficient lighting sensors (buildings leave lights on all night long), better HVAC controls so they are not running when occupancy is low or room specific units, solar panels on roof for certain functions, etc. If that is the case the idea is not bad if the end result really is savings on energy costs for the building management companies via lower electricity bills reduced heating/cooling costs. In general buildings waste a shitload of energy and pass on those high costs to tennants. I would not be surprised that a 40-50 story high rise could save more than $1 million dollars a year on utility costs with simple changes. In D.C. many government buildings installed motion sensor lighting in offices because people would leave their lights on all night long or when they were out all day. Thermostats are on timers. Windows were replaced with more double paned glass to keep in heat/AC better insulate from outside. The knee jerk reaction is to hold up AOC and the Green bullshit deal but there are energy saving changes that benefit everyone that could be required from new constructions and simple retrofits that could be asked of existing building at minimal costs when spread out over 10 years.
