The king of cargo shorts:For years, Old Navy has been the motor sustaining parent company Gap Inc. But in the near future, the brand with nearly $8 billion a year in sales will begin life as a stand-alone, publicly traded company. For the first time in its 25-year history, Old Navy will soar or sink on its own merits. Take a look inside the retailer’s rise, its plans for radical innovation, and of course, the resurgence of the ever-so-dreaded cargo shorts.(Fortune) “What will Americans be wearing in two years? That’s our job to figure out.”
Why all this hate on cargo shorts? They're a "fashion" item that actually works. I don't get it. ["You don't suppose that opinion explains why you're still single, do you?" No. No, I don't.]
Oh, clothing. Whew, OK. I was worried this was yet another option strategy I had to learn. My poor head is bulging with risk-reversal box seagull broken-wing butterfly var swap synthetic CFD hedges already. One more tiny little thing, and I'll be gibbering in a padded room and wearing unstylish jackets with lots of straps.
I don't know about "fashion", but this sailor would have a hell of a time without'em. Plenty of times I've been up the mast, and having all the tools I needed was great (tool belts snag on stuff. You really don't want that happening.)
They're very tacky and not as useful as you'd be lead to believe. They simultaneously perform a worse job than full cargo pants and keep all of the mid-90s questionable style. No person who actually uses the cargo feature would wear them because shorts expose your lower legs to things like flying hammers, splintering wood, etc. If you want utility, a good pair of 5.11 tactical pants will do the job just fine with better material and more practicality built in. I use them for basically everything I do outdoors and have so far been impressed with the performance. Even in the summer heat they breathe really well.
TACKY?!?!? Balderdash! POPPYcock! Horse feathers! Again, more unfounded hate! FWIW, I have probably a dozen pairs of various vintages, I LIVE in them. At least 3 pair are new -- bought because they went on sail and I didn't want to throw the threadbare pairs out without having new inventory in stock. (And I couldn't stomach paying like $50 for a freakin' pair of SHORTS.) And I don't think I could own a single pair of cargo-*pants*. Don't know why. Probably because if it's that cool out, I'd be wearing a pack.
