Let's say Bernie gets pluraity but not majority and gets robbed at the convention. What "legal" way is there to stop him from running independent? IMO the election is lost to Trump either way, at least Bernie can go out a "hero of democracy" and not fade into obscurity at that point, while yes, sending a big fuck you to the establishment. I guess what I'm asking, are there "deadlines" that would prevent said scenario?
I think he would be vilified by Dems as costing them the election the way they attacked JILL Stein and he would become persona nom grata if he ran as independent.
dude will get vilified regardless on election night as his supporters stay home & hand the election to Trump. He's persona non-grata already on record approval.
not if her gets the nomination outright..then it reflects who the primary voters want. If brokered he does not stand a chance and doubt he would continue to waste the money for a losing cause when he is still Senator...
I think it would be near impossible. There may be a path to get on some states ballot as a write in candidate, but for all practical purpose if he continued it would just be to wreck the democratic party. It should be of note that he filed as an independent for the upcoming 2024 Senate Race so he's looking ahead to abandon the democratic party. https://www.ballotpedia.org/Deadline_to_run_for_president
How is he "robbed" if he didn't get a majority? He knew the rules going in. Too bad he didn't protest the last time when he could argue the nomination was stolen from him.
It is probably, going to be hard to be listed in all the US states that is one big reason. Of course, if Bernie Sanders ran as an independent, he will be permanently, banned from the Democrat Party. The more likely scenario is they cheat Bernie Sanders at the Democrat Convention, his supporters riot and burn and trash the place down and stay home on election day or even vote for President Donald Trump in revenge. Bernie Sanders supporters are not going to come quietly.
Indeed. Not robbed if no majority. Just did not get the majority. He did protest last time. And they changed some rules as a result. Most notably that the superdelegates cannot vote until the second round. I sympathized with Bernie more last time than this time around. He really is not a democrat nor is he loyal to the democratic party. He just uses the party machinery as an easy way to get on the ballots. He has been leeching off of them years and then when elections are over he immediately switches his registration back to independent. The DNC plots against him quite a bit but his people plot to bring the DNC down too. He can win by getting the majority of the votes, just like anyone else. If the superdelegates work against him on the second ballot, well the superdelegates are party insiders, and his little freeloading/leeching routine and making it clear that he is not really a democrat works against him with that crew. Too bad. He has gotten pretty good ride with the fake-democrat routine. Got into all the debates, did not have to collect signatures to get on all the ballots, got support and endorsement of other dems etc. etc.
Two things that come to mind that are not directly related to the running as an independent candidate issue, except they sort of are, because they are issues that Bernie will confront along the way: 1) I asked the other day, but it went unaddressed, no replies: What if Bernie does not get a majority and what if the party will not change the rules to have the nominee with the plurality win? And/but none of the other candidates will stand down and drop out or release their votes. So you have a Mexican standoff- so to speak. The process just hangs there with no majority regardless of how many vote rounds they have. For example, biden delegates just say "screw you, I am not yielding to a commie or bloomberg or whatever." I asked if anyone knew what the DNC rules of the road were there or if they will have to make them up as they go along. Because that is another area where mischief can set in big-time. You can argue that the dnc would then be forced to change the rules and allow the plurality candidate to be the winner. Not so fast though Sparky! The dem party does not roll that way. I can see them booting it to their executive committe/governing board, whatever it is called and letting them decide with the inclusion of the superdelegates from all the states. Short answer, I don't know but I would expect something cheesy and sleazy. 2) Anyone thinking of running third party will have to think through how this stupid arrangement that lefties set up in regard to doing a workaround on the electoral college would play out with three major contenders in the race, the dems, bernies socialist party, and the republicans. You know some of the clown states have enacted legislation such that the party getting the popular vote gets all their delegates. Y'all may or may not recall that I argued that this is all fine and dandy as long as they think that the dems have a better shot at the popular vote but that if a scenario ever arises where the lefty vote is split or for some reason Trump get the popular vote by the pantload you will be seeing the little geniuses in all those states suddenly scurrying around like rats yelling "my god, what have we gotten ourselves into." If Bernie ran as an independent the lefty vote will split between bernie and the dnc party and most of the popular vote will go to Trump by far in that divided scenario. So then the lefty vote is divided between two parties BUT THE STATE LEGISLATION PREVENTS THEM FROM CASTING THEIR ELECTORAL VOTE FOR ANYONE OTHER THAN THE ONE WITH THE LARGEST POPULAR VOTE. ie. trump. I don't know. I have not really thought all that through. But be careful Tards, you are not all that smart. As usual when you all-knowingly try to tinker with the Constitution, it just makes things worse. The constitution does need to be amended from time to time but there is a process for that, and the state legislation electoral college workaround is not such a process. It is just some stupid back door bondo and duct tape "get-trump" solution that has not been thought through.
