The Gish Gallop, how do you deal with it?

This is an orphaned point of interest for those who don't like Trump.

The Gish Gallop is a rhetorical technique where someone overwhelms their opponent by rapidly presenting a series of arguments, half-truths, or misleading statements. The aim is to throw out so many points, often lacking in accuracy or basic truth, that it becomes impossible for the opponent to refute them all within the available time or space.

The term comes from creationist Duane Gish, who used this method to bombard opponents with numerous claims during debates, even though most could be easily debunked when examined individually. The tactic relies on the fact that it takes far longer to fact-check and disprove false claims than it does to make them, giving the false impression that the person using the Gish Gallop has "won" by overwhelming the discussion.

Similar terms include "Proof by Verbosity" or "Shotgun Argumentation".

Over time, I’ve noticed that many conservative induhviduals, who originally may have been guilty only of speaking from ignorance or unintentionally spreading misinformation, have adopted Trump’s Gish Gallop style. This shift in communication has led to a flood of rapid, misleading claims that are difficult to address at least very tiresome.

When this technique is combined with scapegoating, blaming vulnerable or marginalized groups for various problems, it becomes a form of "scapegoat galloping" (to coin a term). The sheer volume of false or exaggerated claims not only overwhelms discussion but unfairly targets groups forcing a need to defend on principle. We know it parallels targeting of groups prior genocide. This may not be the plan but it is alarming, which is Trump's intent.

Many of us remain engaged, mistakenly believing we can correct or enlighten them, but often to little effect. Actually they just get worse. We see this "scapegoat galloping" in action every day, and it leads to frustration and a sense of moral injury for those who value truth and fairness.

Do you feel that engaging in these types of political discussions has made you a stronger debater, or has it just worn you down? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Yes, I probably should have said that on ET, not one of the Trumpers can actually mount a proper Gish Gallop, Jem probably the closest, naturally talented in this regard with his black holes. But collectively they channel the greater gallop.

I've come across a few dozen of them here at ET. I've learned to ignore them. Engaging them in an intelligent conversation is not possible.

Do not try to enlighten them. Best to ignore them even if it makes them very angry that you're no longer replying to them.

The idiot ones are the ones who announce to the forum that they're no longer going to read your messages even though you have not replied to them in years because they're a Gish Galloper. :D

I sometimes wonder why wildchild gets a pass from most who respond to him though they know it is stupid. He tries hard just to be annoying but maybe like a kid with Down's Syndrome, you know he can't help it so you find patience?
