The paper’s authors wrote that they drew on “previously unavailable data” for their estimates. They examined figures on border apprehensions and visa overstays to infer the number of undocumented arrivals. They also reconstructed population outflows by looking at data on deportations, voluntary emigration and death rates. In contrast, the “most prominent current estimate” of 11.3 million -- cited by the Pew Research Center -- is based on survey data, the authors wrote. Who was "throwing around" these numbers for the last decade besides republicans? You act like this is old news yet it is making headlines on non-political and non-right leaning sites (Bloomberg in this case). Trump was said to have over estimated the number of illegal immigrants and now you are acting like these validated numbers are old news? The motivation for the MIT and Yale studies originally were to actually show that Trump had wildly over-estimated the amount of illegal immigrants in the USA. The data proved them wrong and rather than bury the study they made it public. Trust me, if the numbers came in low we would be hearing about Trump and his wild over-estimations.
