LAWRENCE COUNTY, Tenn. (WJW) — A new school absence policy in one southern Tennessee county states that a doctor’s note is no longer efficient enough to excuse a student from missing school.

“Absences shall be classified as absent. Absences are not excused or unexcused,” the Lawrence County School System wrote in a late June memo.

The district said its new policy was made in an attempt to combat absenteeism and to ensure “that all school age children attend school.”

During a school board meeting last month, which can be viewed right here, Director of Schools Michael Adkins said the district is “taking control” of school attendance, according to local TV station WSMV.

Acceptable reasons for an absence include the following: a death in the family, some religious observances, a verified chronic illness and emergencies “over which the student has no control.”

For more serious situations, “Special arrangements should be made with the principal or his/her designee regarding an ongoing diagnosed medical issue requiring multiple absences for the student during a specified time or for the duration of the academic year,” the district wrote in the memo.

Part-time days may be allowed for some students, with approved written permission. However, the student must attend at least half of the school day for it to count. A student who comes to school and is sent home sick by the school nurse is going to be marked as tardy, according to the new policy.

During the school board meeting, Adkins reiterated that being sick is part of life.

“If you have the sniffles, that is fine,” Adkins said in the meeting. “You are going to have them when you go to work one day. We have all gone to work sick and hurt and beat up.”

That’s like begging parents to send their sick kids to school so all the other kids & staff can be infected and get sick as well.

Sickness increases the need for religion in people without Medicare. Good for business.

I wonder if attendance is an issue in general. My sister was saying her kids school district was upset at low attendance. And her kids go to one of the wealthiest school districts in the country.

That's stupid. A cold is no reason to keep a child home. If they have a fever yes. Other than that... no. I can't recall one child ever dying in all of my formidable years. Kids get colds dude. They get sick. It builds their immune system.

In schools, sickness spreads like wild fires. And then they spread to the families.

second, you don’t get better from colds if you aren’t resting. It’s hard to rest in school.

    What about this specific policy:

    i had another thought:

dont the republicans strongly believe that Parents should raise their kids the way they want? Its an argument they use to prevent their kids from learning evolution and sex ed. What makes that different from this?

There are plenty of diseases beyond a common cold that can easily be spread in a school environment. Some of these diseases kill or cripple children. Take of a look at how many children are killed or hospitalized by the flu in the average season. With reduced vaccination rates some of these diseases are now more prominent in the U.S.

Encouraging sick children to come into school or sick adults into work is absurd.
