People already can't afford current car payments.. how are they going afford even more expensive cars?

Car Repos Hit Levels Unseen Since 2008 Financial Crisis

"Automotive repossessions reportedly jumped last year to the highest level in 15 years.

Around 1.73 million cars were seized by lenders during 2024, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday (March 26), citing data from Cox Automotive. That was a 16% increase from 2023 and up 43% from two years earlier"

Delinquency rates are the highest ever since they have kept tract of these records...

Car prices have only gone up , the only positive i see in 700k unsold cars due to tarriffs is that prices will hopefully start to retreat. Once we get thr deep session and unemployment skyrockets dealerships will be begging for sales.....as most consumers live paycheck to paycheck this economy is going to fall hard as consumers pull back spending....with tarriffs creating inflation the fed is now once again stuck on rates....looks like Powell has his work cut out for him

Donald Trump has said he "couldn't care less" if carmakers raise prices after his 25% tariffs on foreign-made vehicles comes into effect.

Some analysts have warned that Trump's import charges could lead to the temporary shutdown of some US car production, with increased prices passed onto consumers.

But the US president told NBC News on Saturday that he hoped foreign carmakers will raise prices as it meant "people are gonna buy American-made cars - we have plenty".

On Wednesday, Trump announced new 25% tariffs on cars and car parts entering the US to begin on 2 April. Charges on businesses importing vehicles are expected on 3 April, and taxes on parts are set to start in May or later.

When asked about what his message was to car bosses, he said: "The message is congratulations. If you make your car in the United States, you're going to make a lot of money."

He continued: "If you don't, you're going to have to probably come to the United States, because if you make your car in the United States, there is no tariff."

Recent polling by BBC's US partner CBS News suggests that consumers are worried the tariffs will raise prices, with 72% indicating that they believe costs will increase in the short-term. More than half of respondents said the Trump administration is not focusing enough on lowering costs for Americans…”

Well this isn't going to be true, consumers won't be spending much as tarriffs hit everyone with inflation. The last thing a consumer will be buying is a $37k car with monthly payments over $700....once the consumer is tapped out from tarriffs US car manufacturers aren't going to see any money that he claims they will see

auto makers make small profit for each car sold. i read somewhere gm has $2k profit for each car made, big the profit centers are car financing and part service.

that’s not the point, not many folks are buying american brand cars, they are just junks.

    Honda wins easy.
Used car prices going up, ask your mechanic about longterm repairability.
By the year 2030, cars will become unrepairable throwaways.

Everyone (except me) has 3 cars on my block. Why do you need so many cars? And they complain about traffic congestion.

In that regard, I think Trump is doing a good job. We need to reign in excessive spending in this country. Only if he would start with his own family first. God damn hypocrite. *Sigh*

  9. My dad has 5 or 6 cars. I think that's Stupid and dumb. Hardly none of them gets used.

I think it has to do with psychology. He's kind of old, dumb, has no education, definitely has ED, bald, bored retired... it makes him feel big and proud and successful to have a stable of horses cars.

But I don't say anything. Old people are very stubborn and close minded. It's impossible to change their minds, life perspectives

American cars are junk. They always were. The only time in history they did well was during post WWII reconstruction. Once that ended European & Japanese kicked the Big 3's asses.

Ford/GM don't make cars anyway. They sell bloated useless luxury trucks & SUVs. The sedan is dead. Even Honda & Toyota mainly sell bloated versions of their flagship cars now. The Civic is now indistinguishable from the Accord. Heated leather seats for a compact car like the Civic?
