Study: More than half of US seniors live in poverty

    J. A. Allen, July 27, 2022

A study by Massachusetts University near Boston describes the financial strain that many older US citizens are exposed to due to the increased cost of living. High inflation threatens to aggravate the situation further.

Americans aged 65 and older are more likely to live in poverty than younger adults. That’s according to a study by Massachusetts University. Those aged 35 to 54 are the least likely to live in poverty. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the average poverty line for a single person is $12,880 per year. For a four-person household, it is $26,500 per year.

The “Elder Index” from the Department of Gerontology at Massachusetts University in Boston collects data on the costs of health care, food, housing and transportation. The Index shows that currently 54 percent of older women living alone are considered poor under federal poverty standards and unable to meet basic living expenses, and 45 percent of single men fall into the same category.

In 2020, the survey’s data also showed that the economic situation of more than two million older couples was considered precarious. Jan Mutchler, Director of the Gerontology Institute, explained:

“Any small change in circumstances – rising prices, a medical emergency – can throw an elderly person’s budget completely off balance.”

  3. @mikeriley, they are conditioned to do that, ie. manipulation & remote controlling of the masses works...

I stopped watching TV more than 15 years ago.
Only some years ago started watching Netflix and AmazonPrime for just the stuff I wanted,
without any fking ads: sci-fi series and movies like Star Trek and The Orville :D

Yes we are, from the cradle to the grave we've been conditioned.
It's actually challenging hard work to break the shackles, but
    well worth the effort.

Like you, I rarely ever watch television, I lost
interest back in the late 80's when they
    started replacing female actresses with
transexuals. Hollywood is a strange breed.

I have no sympathy for baby boomers who are poor.

As a generation, they were handed the world (almost literally) from the greatest generation and used it to mortgage the future of their children.

Clearly you can't be speaking of those who are elderly and live below the poverty line? There are always outliers, but with high certainty those are not the same people who blew money in earlier years on worthless consumer products or wasted money otherwise. What I so agree with is that the following generations most likely will have it worse than boomers.

good thing we have millions of illegals crossing the border to suck up more resources.

now we can raise social security payments... oh wait.

  8. Enterprise is one of the best shows I have ever seen, perhaps tied with Firefly. It is a crime, A CRIME, that it isn't as well regarded as it should be.

Those living below the poverty line failed in the greatest boom time in American history.

I’m sure many 65 year olds would be thrilled to pick strawberries in 100 degree heat for $2/hour.
