Steve Wynn's Libel Lawsuit Against Jim Chanos Dismissed with Prejudice Mar 3 2015 | 6:39pm ET Casino kingpin Steve Wynn’s libel lawsuit against famed short-selling hedge fund manager Jim Chanos has been dismissed with prejudice by a California judge. Wynn will therefore have to pay Chanos's legal expenses. The suit was filed in September 2014 and accused Chanos of slandering Wynn during a closed-door talk on the Macau casino industry in Berkley, California last April. The suit alleged Chanos accused both Wynn and his company of engaging in practices that violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Judge William Orrick concluded that Chanos’s comments did not amount to statements of fact but merely reflected opinions, which are not actionable as they are not factual assertions and can’t be proven false. Chanos, founder of hedge fund Kynikos Associates, was fairly outspoken last year about his negative views on the Macau casino business. He is famous for correctly identifying accounting irregularities at Enron before the company went bankrupt. Kynikos, which is Greek for "cynic", is a short-only fund.
