As I have mentioned before, as my girl (and many dogs for that matter) get on up there in age, their back legs and hips get weaker and weaker. This became a problem when she would come in from the outside if her paws were wet. She'd hit the tile floor, then slip and fall badly. Not good. Even though she could get right up, the falls really bothered me. What if she fell in the wrong way and snapped a bone back there? Well I tried towels and carpet runners, but the problem is they're a pain in the ass because the outside door fits really tight on the bottom with its rubber insulation thing. Then it came to me. You know that really thin stuff that for whatever reason women like to line cabinets and drawers with in the kitchen... that sticky rubber matting? Well I laid it down abutting the door jam and secured it with a colorful duct-tape on both ends with a few strips of tape across every couple of feet. I used a whole roll lol. As always, my innovation "went over real well." It's like... "Whatever! Go to friggin WMT and buy a new roll for $7 and quit bitching if that stuff means that much to you." Gimmee a break. "How much would a doggy broken leg cost us?!" --- I mean... whatever. But it works, and the door thing doesn't pull it up. No more slips on a rainy day.
Another thing you can do is tape down paper floor covering that's used on construction jobs to protect the floor while drywall and painting is being done. This paper is similar in feel to a brown paper grocery bag and makes the floor non-slip for your dog and it's easy to tape down and rip up if it gets too trashed out. I recommend using a light adhesive tape like blue painters tape since it's so easy to pull up without leaving any sticky residue on the floor. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Trimaco-Ea...8-Mil-Paper-3-ft-x-140-ft-Drop-Cloth/50265367
My thing looked stupid, so what I did was I made about a 4X4 square using two strips of the drawer liner, pretty much covering the door's swing, and then used (the more aesthetic and traditional ) carpet runner. She also has a small indoor/outdoor mat on the tile where here food and water are so she has grip there also. And this is a new one I learned from the vet last year... I elevated her food and water bowls about 8". It makes it easier for them supposedly. Now she's never had a problem eating with her bowl on the floor, I could probably sink it 8" lol, but it's the drinking thing I think that the vet is referring to. Why the difference I don't know. My guess it's because they can take a bite and pick their head up, but with water it has to be lapped up so they have to keep their head down if they want a good amount.
