Small chloroquine study stopped after irregular heart beats detected in subjects

A small Brazilian study on the effects of the anti-malaria drug chloroquine, which is similar to the drug that President Trump has touted as a possible "game changer" in treating the coronavirus, was abruptly halted because some patients taking high doses developed irregular heart rates generating "safety hazards."

The findings were revealed in a study funded by the Brazilian state of Amazonas and published on Saturday in medRxiv, an online server for medical articles, The New York Times first reported.

Chloroquine is similar to hydroxychloroquine, the drug Trump has repeatedly touted. Health experts have insisted that not enough is known about either drug to determine its efficacy in combating COVID-19.

The Brazilian study included 81 hospitalized patients, with about half being given a dose of 50 milligrams of chloroquine twice daily for five days. The other participants were prescribed a dose of 600 milligrams for 10 days.

Patients taking higher doses experienced heart arrhythmias, or improper beating of the heart, within three days, according to the study. Eleven patients died by the sixth day of treatment and caused the research on high-dosages to end.

"Preliminary findings suggest that the higher CQ dosage (10-day regimen) should not be recommended for COVID-19 treatment because of its potential safety hazards," the study's abstract said. "Such results forced us to prematurely halt patient recruitment to this arm."

The lower-dosage portion of the study did not include enough patients to gauge whether it is effective in treating severely ill patients, the Times noted. The researchers said that more studies assessing the efficacy of chloroquine are "urgently needed."

The researchers said that the study would prove useful given the global push to use anti-malaria drugs to treat COVID-19, providing "updated COVID-19 patient management recommendations." The study was published in medRxiv before being peer-reviewed, the Times noted.

There is no known cure for COVID-19. While Trump and some of his allies have repeatedly promoted the use of hydroxychloroquine, health experts such as Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, warn that there isn't enough data to show if it works.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes on its website that hydroxychloroquine, which is also used to treat lupus, and chloroquine are "under investigation in clinical trials for pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and treatment of patients with mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19."

The Food and Drug Administration in late March issued an emergency use authorization for the anti-malaria drugs, noting it would allow more than 30 million doses of the drugs to go to the Strategic National Stockpile.

  2. Seems like this should be in Chit Chat because it is not political.

  3. I'm not taking sides , but Trump mentioned this drug being a "game changer", therefore, this post along with Trump's words make it political. The response and criticism of Trump's "game changer" phrase are absolutely political.

From a mod's perspective, any post, good or bad, that focuses on Trump ends up getting moved to the Politics section anyways at some point.

Over 6,000 doctors the whole world over having good results saving seriously ill Corona Virus from sure death yet, liberal media continues with their lies discounting the drug Hydroxychloroquine's effectivity? In contrast, no single article on the adverse effects of ventilators killing more and more seriously ill patients infected by Corona Virus and no one reporting on that fact? Liberal media and their cohorts including, our resident ET trolls just want more dead Americans to use as a cudgel to bash President Donald Trump. You guys have no shame or sense of decency. One day, it is going to be you on the receiving end of karma. None of us are going to care either!

Let's first deal with ventilators - there are endless articles in the media about the adverse effects of ventilators and doctors moving away from using them for COVID-19 patients. Google has a mere 86,900,000 results on this subject. Let's look at a few of the results from the first page in Google.

Doctors Are Now Moving Away From Ventilator Treatments for Coronavirus Patients

With ventilators running out, doctors say the machines are overused for Covid-19

Are doctors HARMING coronavirus patients by putting them on ventilators too early? Doctors warn the gadgets may be overused and could even damage the lungs of the infected
    • Almost two-thirds of coronavirus sufferers on ventilators in UK do not survive
    • Experts say ventilators are being implemented too soon and causing more harm
    • The machines, a last resort for patients, can make inflammation in lungs worse

Now let's move on to deal with the facts about doctors. In a study, over 6000 doctors DID NOT state they are having "good results saving seriously ill Corona Virus from sure death" from using hydroxychloroquine.

This is what the doctors in the study actually said -- In the largest survey of 6200 doctors only 37% of doctors said they would consider hydroxychloroquine effective with the second place answer being "Nothing" with 32%. Not very overwhelming support. See page with Question 13 results. https://public-cdn.sermo.com/covid1...ve-i-sermo-covid-19-global-analysis-final.pdf

To be fair this report is from March 25th to 27th. More recent questions and results of doctors can be found at - https://app.sermo.com/covid19-barometer?utm_campaign=wwwsermo_covid19

As I've mentioned, I took this drug and they don't like to prescribe it because there are issues with blood pressure and arrhythmia. You have to have a checkup and get a script. And that is just for potential malaria. Giving it to sick people is a risk/reward decision that ought to be made by an infectious disease specialist and treatment conducted under supervision.
