I thought about it.. decided I'd be a landlord if I could partner up with Hell's Angels, have them collect the rents and let the tenants know we weren't taking shit from them. I knew a guy, psychopath for sure, successful small business man and landlord. A tenant stiffed him, made him run in some circles with promises to pay.. He beat the tenant to a pulp! The local pd knew the tenant and didn't really concern themselves with it at all. Amazing what some people get away with... I knew a guy that had to pay back a year's section 8 housing allowance. His tenants wouldn't let the inspector in for the annual inspection so the government people took back the money they paid for the year. The tenants were Blacks, they got in via some scam artist that posed as them and maybe they pulled that stuff just because they hate white landlords. They sure knew what they could get away with.. The US is kind of a modern-day hell, no?
Actually I have read that landlords like getting section 8 tenants because they know the rent will be paid. with low income tenants, that can be a big problem that leads to endless litigation at Landlord Tenant court. Of course the tenants have free lawyers, many cities have ridiculous laws letting them stay rent free for months on end while a case is pending, and of course, if they can show housing code violations, they get off and the landlord faces fines. And of course who is in the best position to make sure there are violations? The tenants. The real tragedy of section 8 is the damage it does to neighborhoods in the name of government social engineering. The house in the video looked like it was pretty nice before they trashed it. Probably a nice neighborhood that the tenants terrorized. At the least, who wants to live next to a trash dump like that? Liberals see it all differently. They see social justice in action. Bigots who moved to the suburbs to racially isolate themselves have their worst nightmare jammed in their faces, paid for by their own tax dollars. A liberal's dream come true.
He made the decision to rent to section 8 people. Many owners just think of the big checks (compared to what he should be renting it for) coming from the government every month. Not realizing that- 1) They have animals moving into their nice home 2) The neighborhood property values will plunge 3) The crime rate will soar So honestly, its hard to feel bad for him when he pretty much screwed over the neighbors and surrounding community with his decision. I mean seriously, what the F did he think was going to happen?
Didn't one of Obama's buddies get a big government grant in Chicago to build section 8 housing which deteriorated so badly in a few years that it had to be torn down? I seem to recall something like that.
I agree he bears some blame since he apparently chose to go the Section 8 route. Seeing the pictures of the house BEFORE he went Section 8 shows that it was a really nice place. Why wouldn't he have tried renting to someone responsible? And I'm guessing there is no homeowners association since the yard was a jungle and neighbors would have been up in arms about the mess. Next, as a landlord did he not ever drive by? Stop in to see what was going on? Tenants have some rights but I'd think the owner of the property in that state could enter the premises whether to repair a leaky faucet, toilet, etc. I've owned rental property and have gone into the houses for various reasons having given the tenant notice.
Easier said than done. My soon to be ex brother-in-law owns a bunch of rental properties. Despite going to great lengths to choose only the best potential tenants. He's constantly repairing damage or results of neglect. A few years ago one was arrested for using his property as a meth lab. He spent, I believer it was, $20,000 alone just complying with federal regulations for the clean up.
