Supreme Court Rejects NCAA’s Tight Limits on Athlete Benefits, Compensation
The court rules the NCAA violated antitrust law by limiting schools from competing for player talent by offering better benefits

The 9-0 decision doesn’t open up a world of direct, unlimited pay for college athletes, an issue that wasn’t before the court. Instead, the justices said the NCAA must allow colleges to recruit athletes by offering them additional compensation and benefits, as long as they are tied to education.

That means schools could offer compensation beyond the cost of attending college, such as scholarships for graduate or vocational schools, internships, computer equipment and study-abroad programs—and limited cash awards for athletes, potentially nearly $6,000 for now, who do well in the classroom.

The ruling could have wide impact because it dealt a considerable legal blow to the NCAA’s ability to use amateurism as a shield against efforts by athletes to share in the successes of a multibillion-dollar industry built on their labor. The NCAA for decades has imposed narrow and tightly enforced standards restricting athlete compensation.

This is just posturing. The local university basketball coach takes down 400,000 in listed comp. Probably another 200-300k in ad rev. That's what the university pays him. They probably take down 50M+ in revenue off the team. It's just a "oh my god woe is us" play by the literal billionaire sharks running the NCAA. They're doing it because this pissant benefit that will be paid to the players is so much smaller than what they would be paying if they seemed indignant.

In reality I think the team should be disconnected from education. It creates a perverse incentive that isn't to the spirit of what a University should be. Budgets in STEM shouldn't be slashed so that the coach can get his fourth Ferrari. Make the team unrelated to the university except by name and pay them an average AAA level salary for the conference. Simple. If they want to attend the university they can suffer the system like the rest of us.I've yet to meet this "academically bright and athletically gifted" player that the high school to college farm system is allegedly producing these days. There's a reason programs like advertising and marketing in b-school are filled with these knuckledraggers.

At top academic institutions there are quite a few scholar athletes. Many never make it to bschool as they are picked up by Goldman and just stay in high finance.

i agree about the coaches pay. In many states the coach is the highest paid public employee in the state.

I don’t think pulling the team from the university makes sense. It just becomes another minor league then.

  4. Let's clarify things for those who I have seen grumbling about the decision:

Less than 1% of college athletes get free rides so stop the bullshit they are getting an education for free.

NCAA brings in $1 billion a year in revenues but tells poor athletes they cannot get internships or make some money to cover food or autograph a shirt and sell it.

Colleges in the top 50 generate a profit from athletics from tickets, merchandising, sponsorships, concessions, advertising. But if a student needs a laptop or school supplies the NCAA has restrictions. Fucktards.

Colleges make a fortune off of free labor and have a monopoly over that labor in what they can and cannot do while spending money on fancy stadiums and going into debt for it.

NCAA needs a kick in the ass because they got anti-trust exemption and claim amatuer status but run a for profit business on the backs of those amatuer athletes. To say the athletes should be thankful they are getting a free education is bullshit because it is not free at all obviously. Also, they are restricted from shit regular students are allowed to do.

    Fuck the NCAA

Well your explanation that only 1% (it's actually 2% of athletes) get scholarships explains why the average college athlete washes out of school without help.

As for this I have my doubts.

I have a bill here for one semester of classes a while ago and there were $200 of recreational fees attached to what I paid.

The average student is footing most of the bill for stadiums and sports teams. Which only further solidifies the point that the NCAA and school leadership are taking down most of the profits. It's not a mystery why the basketball coaches live in mansions. I remember the protests when the school decided to build a brand new addition to the stadium and new athletic center instead of fixing the dilapidated 60 year old physics building. The corruption doesn't just effect athletes. It's a large part of the reason college is so fucking expensive.

Needless to say I stand by my point. Remove sports teams from universities and make them city/state level minor league teams. Pay them appropriately and the entire systemic problem solves itself.

  6. That fee goes to intramural sports, upkeep of the gym used by all students, and other activities for general student population... it does nothing for the stadiums really...Even in a school of 30,000 students that adds up to $6,000,000 which is for the benefit of the budget for the students.

Stadiums are paid for with off campus sponsorship deals, alumni fundraising, concessions, ticket sales, advertising.... as I said colleges run it like a private business and expect the athletes to be unpaid servants with no benefits allowed at all or they lose thier eligibility.
