So, the purpose of a corporation is to bring gains to the workers. I think I've got it right. I admire Bernie Sanders -- I have from the time he was mayor of Burlington VT. Straight shooter, focused on the common weal. A moral and upright kinda guy. (Don't ask me about the other one, whose name I can't even speak without spitting in disgust.) The thing is, I can admire/uplift/*love* Bernie and his politics all day long, without having to agree on his economics. Which are patently absurd. Were Bernie ever to realize that the promise of property+liberty -- the ability to peaceably do what I wish with my own property (and to then be secure in the outcome) -- is what has driven improvements in the condition of humankind since we put down the spears and specifically planted wheat/corn, and then irrigated, and started to acquire things by trade rather than simply beating up the other folk and taking their property........ THAT PROMISE simply goes all to shit when someone sez, "Nope! All Your Bases Are Ours -- and your shops and your smiths and your mills and your looms and your herds and your productive, lovingly cared-for river valleys and ......" It all simply goes to shit. As does the patent process, and the Clean Room labs, and the computational software, university R&D and the..... "Dumbass!" There are so many ways to do what Bernie desires to be done. But *most* most most assuredly, about the most destructive is to act on a notion that "What's mine is mine, and what's yours..... is mine, too." DUMBass.......
Business investment now is much lower than it was decades ago - a little over 3% of GDP versus an average of around 5% from the 50s to the mid-80s. However, the need for such investment is also less due to lower population growth, and actual historical data from that era shows that stocks which focused on paying dividends outperformed those which focused on investment - implying that much of the investment was uneconomic and thus wasted. Buybacks are an easy target, but to actually shake up the corporate sector in a beneficial way they ought to go after the comfortable oligopolies that have emerged in pretty much every industry.
