    Capitalism: 1) an economic system in which capital and property, and the means of production, distribution and exchange are to a large extent in private hands;

    2) the concentration of capital in the hands of a few, or the resulting power or influence;

    3) a system favoring such concentration of wealth.

    In the United States, capitalism seems to be perceived as an economic system favoring innovation, freedom of choice, fairness, and equality of economic opportunity. But none of these perceptions are necessarily incorporated into the dictionary definition of capitalism.

    The reality of American style capitalism is consistent with the dictionary definition but quite inconsistent with the common perception.

    So when one speaks of "capitalism as we know it" , are we speaking of the perception or the reality?
