British Royals seem to have a passion for American divorcees. Meghan is the 2nd American to marry a British Royal, and luckily has not caused any uproar. King Edward abdicated his throne in 1936 in order to marry Ms. Wallis W. Simpson, an American divorcee. That's how controversial their love affair was back then in England.
The Royals were so paranoid about Communism after what happened in Russia and nearly happened in Germany in the 1920s that they thought a strong right wing Germany would hold back the Red tide. Beside the fact that they were German Hanoverians and spoke German together in the 19th century.
Not that I'm aware of, though King Edward had allegedly been on friendly terms with Hitler. The objection to the affair / engagement was that Simpson's ex-husband was still alive. The Church of England, of which the British Crown was the head, rejected the remarriage of a divorced person whose former spouse was alive.
