Retrieving information from a laptop with a bad monitor

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by DallasCowboysFan, Dec 6, 2016.

  1. I bought a new 15 inch HP laptop last night.
The monitor went out on the old one.......18 months old.
I am trying to set up the new one.
I got rid of all the bloat ware and I am trying to reset it with new subscriptions to MSFT Office, Malware Bytes, Spybot, RegSeeker, Google Ghostery and AdblockPlus.
    And lots of bookmarks.

It takes a long time to set up a new computer the way you want it.

    A few questions.....

    1. When I downloaded Google Chrome I also got Ghostery. I keep seeing a blue popup with the number of blocked sites. I went to settings and was able to reduce it to 3 seconds but I want to get rid of it. It was not on my old one. How do I do it....I could not find anything under settings to eliminate it.

    2. Every time I type in a password Google asks me if I want to save it and I keep saying never. Their AI logarithm is not very bright because after 100x you would think it would learn. Is there any way I can permanently prevent Google from asking me...I will never want Google or anyone else to save my passwords. I searched but did not find the Wizard to tell me how to get rid of it.

    3. My old computer is running but the monitor does not work. It's hard to transfer files if you can't see what you are doing. I tried hooking the laptop to my tv with a HDMI cable but it did not work. I was hoping to use it as a monitor. Best Buy said they would transfer the files for $80. Is there a way I can do it from laptop to laptop.......some way of importing files from the desktop automatically? I'd like to save $80 but it would be fun to learn something new and be able to overcome BB.

    4. I tried importing my bookmarks but they were on Google and I was only able to import IE. So, none were imported because I don't use it. Is there a way I can do this without having to search and save every bookmark? I had about 50 of them.

    5. How do I create a shortcut for My Computer? I had one in my Tiles on the last computer. I created one for This PC but but I can't find one for My Computer on this one. I could not find it under APPS or File Explorer or Settings.

    6. How can I stop Google from creating a list of the last sites I have visited? I managed to do it with my last one but I can't figure it out this time. I don't want a bunch of tiles underneath the search bar. I want a clean page.

    7. When I log on I get the typical MSFT picture.... Is there anyway I can customize it to have the time, date and temperature on the start page like we have with smartphones? It would be more practical. I have never tried this before. It can be Google, MSFT or Yahoo it doesn't matter.

I have never stored anything in the Cloud because I never wanted to worry about anybody hacking into my personal life, but I might have to reconsider...I keep my passwords in an email document that I email back and forth to myself whenever I add or change a password. That way it is always available to me in Google or Yahoo.

Maybe I should do that with the other files I have created.

How did you try to transfer files unless they are on the same network and you should be able to see your old computer files from the new computer?

  3. The monitor went out on the old laptop. It gets power and the fan runs, but the screen does not illuminate.

I tried hooking it up to my tv with a HDMI cable but that did not work either.

I can't transfer the files if I can't see what I am doing.

I took it to Best Buy ( a major electronics retailer) and they can hook it up to their monitor and transfer everything to the new one.

I'd like to figure it out myself but I feel like I am stuck. Besides, they said there could be as much as a 2 day turnaround for the transfer.

The solution I can offer is to extract the hard drive from the old computer and put it inside hard drive usb enclosure and then hook it up to the new computer.

  5. Get one of these: http://a.co/i3MasPa

I have one and they're the best thing since sliced bread. Just pull out the drive and plug it into this USB adapter cable.
I've used it for both normal platter hard drives and also SSD.

Gkishot solution is where I'd start. Best Buy is pulling your leg if they say they'll hook it up to their monitor and extract it. If you plugged it into your tv and it didn't display it sounds like a graphics card issue. But the strange part is I'm guessing it's nothing high end and probably just has intergrater graphics on the CPU which is outside my tech knowledge of why it's not displaying.

All their going to do is take the hard drive out and extract its contents. Tricky part is this I'm probably be a lot easier if it wasn't a laptop.

  7. Thanks, I'll check it out.
I just subscribed to Amazon Prime two weeks ago, free shipping.
    Good timing !

  8. I looked at this closer and the SATA hard drive adapter looks like something on the back of my old desktop. But I don't have one of those on my laptop. Are you suggesting that if I removed the back of the laptop and removed the hard drive that I would be able to attach it ?

    1. Getting the hard drive out of a laptop is usually pretty easy, provided you have the right tools (usually a very small Phillips head screwdriver). It really helps to have the manual, so I'd suggest finding it online.

    2. After removing the drive, the type of adapter you need to connect it to your new computer is dictated by the interface type of the drive. Most newer laptop drives are SATA, but there are some others out there, both older IDE ones, and newer ones for certain SSD's -- the manual should tell you what type it is, or just look at some pictures online. Regardless, there should be a cheap USB adapter available that you can buy for your old drive.

To get rid of Ghosty popping up, you were close when you found the 3 second setting. Its right above it. Uncheck that box (as I have below) right under "Purple Box".
