Refrigerator now BARELY cooling...

Discussion in 'Chit Chat' started by SoyUnGanador, Dec 18, 2022.

  1. It is cooling almost none, maybe none at all. The freezer next to it is still working, maybe that is the only thing keeping the refrigerator a bit colder than room temperature.

It is about 6 or 7 years old. Samsung model.

I there any way I can try anything to get it working again? Or should I call some repair guy? Or don't waste time, just ante up and buy a new one?

    Thanks!

With trip charges and labor rates the way they are, you'll end up paying way more than you realize to get it diagnosed and fixed, especially if it needs a new compressor or some other significant part. I'd just bite the bullet and get a new one if I were you.

It's a bummer I can only guess how side-by-side fridges work, because it seems a simple issue if you say the freezer next to it is fine.

In the most popular model (freezer on top...) , the cooling tubes are located on top and cool just the freezer, and there are simply vents that let the freezing air drop into the fridge area.

I am assuming that side-by-side fridges work in the same manner, where the freezing side pumpp the cold air to the fridge side with a fan. One thing you can check is when the fridge is running (compressor on), feel the air coming out of the fridge-side vents on the side. If you don't feel anything, then they are blocked in some way.

It could also be possible you have items blocking the vents on either side. Try to move everything in both sections away from the interior sides of the fridge and give it 24 hours, see if that helps.

It would be a shame for you to scrap a perfectly good appliance due to something simple.

Like if you ever see a vacuum cleaner in front of someone's house for trash pickup that looks like it is in reasonable condition? Grab it, because if the motor works, then it is just a busted belt or a clogged hose. People are really dumb when it comes to simple fixes.

Buy a new fridge and put the old one in the front yard, makes a good place to keep your brooskies handy when you and fast eddie smoke blunts in the car on blocks out there.

I'd agree with checking to see if vents or fans are clogged up. I made the call one time and the guy pulled the fridge out, unscrewed the back plate, and pretty sure he found a Golden retriever back there. We had a Golden back then and I should have figured that might be the problem. Never thought about pulling that plate and vacuuming, but would have saved a trip charge.

My side by side had the same problem, it was the light switch failing to turn off the four bulbs.
The always on bulbs made enough heat, turning cold too cool.

  7. Thanks everyone. I pulled it out of its spot last night, and brushed off a bunch of dust that was outside one of the back panels. Didn't get any better. I'll unscrew the panels tonight and see if I can see anything. Try and find where air is coming out, or supposed to come out as well. Will try and post pics if relevant.

That old saying.. they don't make them like they used to.

I think there's truth to that with appliances.

    and roads.. :D
