In this Dec. 3, 2014 file photo provided by Sotheby's Auction House, a record-setting 4.16-pound white truffle is seen at the U.S. Sabatino headquarters in West Haven, Connecticut. Sotheby's sold the massive fungus at auction on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014 to a food and wine lover from Taiwan who was bidding by phone. The firm chose to auction the item in New York to benefit Citymeals-on-Wheels and the Children's Glaucoma Foundation.

I read the other day that there's a certain percentage of the population whose taste buds can't detect the bitterness of foods like brussell sprouts, broccoli and cabbage. Along that line of thought, there must be certain people out there that have the genetic disposition to think that truffle is just the most amazing flavor ever, but I'm not one of them. I just don't get it. In fact, whenever I see an entree I want to order that comes with truffle fries, I always tell the server, "I'll have the truffle fries with no truffle". :)

I have dined at French Laundry, Per Se etc. but I can't imagine dropping $61,250 for an ingredient even if I had Bill Gates' kind of wealth and palate to much. I am guessing the buyer didn't know anything about the cause....
