I am looking into a stock called CPHI and reading their 10-q report. It says that there is around 43 million common stocks. Does that mean that the float is at 43 million ? I am sorry . Newbie here trying to learn more . Thank you

  2. There are "Authorized Shares" and "Issued Shares"... the float is part of the issued shares. You may not have enough info to tell for sure which is mentioned in the report.

As a trader neither Authorized nor Issued will affect you... but you might be interested in knowing the "handle" (recent average volume x share price) if you're planning to take a big position.

Float is less than the total common stock for most companies.
Float is the portion of common stock that is available for traders to trade on a daily basis.
Insiders & large institutions often own large positions in companies which they hold for longer periods of time. Those shares aren't counted as part of the float.

thank you that was very informative. I wish more people can explain things the way you do. Too many people here at times want to explain the market like we are all experts. lol
