question about filling s&p index futures at market open

Discussion in 'Index Futures' started by orangelam, Feb 14, 2024.

  1. can anyone share your experience in filling futures price at active market open(e.g. EST 9:30am) ? as we know that s&p index futures does not support filling at market open as there is no pre-market auction period. how can we fill the price as close as open price at possible?

  2. You have plenty of time to fill with virtually any size, a few seconds before the stock market opens. If you get the direction right, your fill will be close or better. he he.

Market on open was used quite a bit back in the pit days and you would get a fill within the opening range. Now days most markets do not support market on open but some platforms will do so by sending a market order on specified times.

You can also use market on open as shown below but it will send the order exactly when the market opens, in case of the ES it will be 5 PM Central and not the "regular session" that starts at 8:30 AM central ( 6:30 AM for us on the West coast). You can send a time released order at 8:30 AM central to achieve similar results. 2nd screen shot

Unless you are only trying for a quick 1, 2, 3 points why place order right at open? Do you have some way of determining, at a high probability, the trend direction for the day?

Today, for example, small pop, then dropped, popped again higher, dropped again even lower, then trended up all the way into the close:-
