I have a 15 inch HP laptop. It's about 2.5 years old and the battery began to die on me. So, I bought a new one from amazon and added 8GB of RAM while it was open. The battery lasts several hours when it is unplugged, and it processes much faster. Great! But, sometimes the screen locks up. I can't move the cursor. I have tried hitting function/insert and that works, but then a blue highlight expands over the page. If I move the page up and down it highlights the entire page. If I try using control / alt /delete, it returns to normal after I x out of it. But then the problem randomly returns later. It has to be something simple I am overlooking. Any suggestions?
Its more likely a timing mismatch in the ram. A bios update might help work around it but the symptoms are pretty classic for a mismatch.
I would pull the new RAM and see if it stops. Did you check to make sure the RAM is compatible before purchasing?
Great, my son had a bad stick in a new computer a couple of years ago and similar issues to what you describe. His was a desktop so easier to take out and move around compared to most laptops.
I removed the new RAM and tested it again, same problem. Maybe they can tell me if the RAM is bad. I will just take it to Best Buy ......I am out of ideas.
Does your laptop have one stick of RAM and you replaced the old one with a new one? Or did you leave the old RAM in and placed a second RAM stick next to it (added a RAM stick)?
