For contributions to war peace and stopping a Middle Eastern war. Isn't he more deserving than a certain buffoon who did nothing to deserve it and was clamoring for people to join him into bombing another country?
Should they give Putin the Nobel Peace Prize for prosecuting, jailing, and murdering his political enemies? Would you like some radioactive material in your diet?
One wants to start a war, the other wants to stop a war. When are the Obama zombies going to wake up?
One wants to bomb the heck out of a government gassing its people. The other wants to perserve its economic and strategic interests in Syria including military equipment sales and a naval base. Let's not pretend that Putin is any type of hero.
You're giving some serious benefit of the doubt to Obama in that statement. You should be saying "One wants regime change through force". Let's not pretend Obama is in the right on this.
I never said that Obama was in the right, but certainly Putin is no angel either. The U.S. does not have any really good options in this situation. It is difficult to back either side in this civil war. On one side you have the rebels that are primarily associated with Al Queda. On the side you have an oppressive government that gases its own people. This really rules out pushing for "regime change" in Syria. The best you can do is bomb in order to diminish Assad's capability to gas his own people. The question becomes "Is this really important to the political and economic interests of the U.S.?"
American foreign policy has hardly been "high and mighty". We should BUTT OUT... America should take care of our homeland and let others do the same. It's not (or should not be) America's business to stop all of the world's bad guys from doing bad things. Some dickweed Congressman was on Fox News last night... highly advocating bombing Syria because of the "atrociousness of the gas attacks". Kinda pissed me off... like America is the self-appointed keeper of right and wrong. I agree... gassing innocents or even ANYBODY is atrocious... but it shouldn't be our business to police the world.
The Putin strategy, assuming he gets Syria's cooperation, is brilliant. Any civilized country would welcome the Putin initiative with open arms. But the U.S. is not a civilized country. Putin is threatening to expose the real motives of the U.S. Putin may pull off this gotcha moment on the U.S., potentially showing the U.S. to be the hypocritical monster it is. The U.S. will now do everything it can to screw-up Putin's plan from succeeding, because the U.S. is itching to attack Syria. The U.S. economy is war based, as the military industrial complex is now a huge part of the total economy in terms of both production and consumption. The more wars we can foment, the more consumption and "productivity". Of course, it is, nevertheless, a perverse economy. Recall that the U.S. ignored the reports of the experts which could not find any WMDs in Iraq, and insisted on attacking IRAQ anyway. The US may find an excuse to attack Syria, even if Syria agrees to get rid of all their chemical weapons and agrees to international inspection. We don't give up easily on a good opportunity to start yet another war. If we have no choice, we will ignore the facts, and proceed to create our own intelligence reports to support our war ambitions, ala' Iraq. We have a huge clandestine spy industry, CIA, NSA, and the redundant Military "intelligence" arm of the Pentagon. The unexpressed role of these agencies is to supply the "justifications" for military production and consumption. The bizarre note to this whole episode is that Putin is handing Obama a chance to backtrack gracefully from the brink, but Obama will likely not gracefully accept the opportunity handed him. Listen to Obama's speech tonight. That will tell you much. What a Country!
You're still insinuating, though, that it was Assad who gassed his people, when no evidence has conclusively shown this. If evidence existed, don't you think it would be right there on the front page of the NY Times? The question of whether this has to do with interests in the US is a double edged one. Does it further the interests of the American people? No. And that's all that really matters. Unfortunately, it DOES further the interests of the political elite, the Saudis and Turks and the War Machine in this country.
