Donald J. Trump– Verified account @realDonaldTrump Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag - if they do, there must be consequences - perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail! 3:55 AM - 29 Nov 2016 18.7K RETWEETS 51.7K LIKES
Supreme court said otherwise. But even though I do not agree that people should be jailed over something that was ruled to not to be a crime, it is pathetic that such act is allowed. It has nothing to do with a freedom of speech and is an act if total disrespect to our country.
Personally, I'm good with possible punishment for burning the flag. Yeah, it's an expression of 1st Amendment right... but there are other ways of expressing dissatisfaction with US government than burning the flag. (Hey, a LOT of patriots have served and died for that flag, you know.) Americans have been waaayyyy tolerant in such things. Perhaps, too tolerant. And of course... if Hellary endorsed "burning the flag as a right", you know it's got to be bad.
Disconcerting. People have the right to burn the flag. The President should not be saying otherwise. It begins a slippery slope that allows people to start banning all expression based on what they believe to be right.
Agree, but I wouldn't object to a law being passed which banned the burning. Until then, it's a protected right. (I once served on a military Color Guard.... where accidentally allowing the flag to touch the ground is a big no-no. So you can imagine how I might see burning the flag as a significant transgression... protected by the 1st or not.) Speaking of "... banning all expression based on what they believe to be right...", isn't that what Lefty-endorsed PC speech is all about? We've "slud a fir piece" down that slope already, have we not?
Regardless of what "lefty-endorsed PC speech dictates", we as conservatives should hold to what we believe in. Not go tit for tat. You might not object to a law being passed banning the burning. You might not object to a law being passed to ban something else after that. Eventually, you would object to a law being passed to ban some form of expression, and this is precisely the point. You cannot ban expression, as long as it is peacefully done. If you do, you being going down the rabbit hole, as Optionpro mentioned. Donald Trump may not like people who burn flags. I don't like them, personally. But Trump needs to stand for the rights of all Americans, especially those whose actions he does not support - provided they are protected by the Constitution of the United States. That is his sacred duty as President of the United States.
