JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Pope Francis and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traded words on Monday over the language spoken by Jesus two millennia ago.

"Jesus was here, in this land. He spoke Hebrew," Netanyahu told Francis, at a public meeting in Jerusalem in which the Israeli leader cited a strong connection between Judaism and Christianity.

"Aramaic," the pope interjected.

"He spoke Aramaic, but he knew Hebrew," Netanyahu shot back.

A Jew, Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the Roman-ruled region of Judea, now the Israeli-occupied West Bank. He grew up in Nazareth and ministered in Galilee, both in northern Israel, and died in Jerusalem, a city revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims, and to which Israelis and Palestinians lay claim.

Palestinians sometimes describe Jesus as a Palestinian. Israelis object to that.

Israeli linguistics professor Ghil'ad Zuckermann told Reuters that both Netanyahu, son of a distinguished Jewish historian, and the pope, the spiritual leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, had a point.

"Jesus was a native Aramaic speaker," he said about the largely defunct Semitic language closely related to Hebrew. "But he would have also known Hebrew because there were extant religious writings in Hebrew."

Zuckermann said that during Jesus' time, Hebrew was spoken by the lower classes - "the kind of people he ministered to".

I have several Bible versions;
i like the Catholic Bible, NEB version, + especially the KNOX translation in Psalms ,Proverbs, Song of Solomon. ...................................I have had the Catholic Bible named the JerUSalem Bible, gave that one away.

With all due respect to the Pope+ President neither one of those rules Israel; + Hillary Clinton was the biggest fraud of all. She tried to tell/scam Israel about west bank building locations of houses, + she ran the biggest REALTY scam in Arkansas, whitewater!!

Most bible students think, even if Hebrew was a low class language;; King Solomon, King David[ Hi velocity]sling shooter]spoke/wrote Hebrew. King Solomon did business with Arabs, with wisdom ..........................................................

 

I would like to be able to read greek and hebrew.

You can somewhat;
a Strongs concordance,[book] has every Hebrew + greek word,[in Bible] asigned a number.
For example I look up the english word '' silver '', in proverbs. Its assigned a number which I then look up in Strongs Hebrew dictionary in back of his book, Silver means, in Hebrew , silver , money, price, depending on context

That's almost correct, what I said was that they did not specifically target conservatives. They more closely scrutinized groups that were applying for 503c-6 status "pre-clearance" that appeared to be political groups rather than social welfare groups. [Many more "conservative" political groups tried to sneak in under this category than did "liberal" political groups; thus giving the appearance that the IRS was "targeting" only conservative groups for special examination. In reality, The IRS made a belated , but better late than never, decision to target all groups that had the appearance of being unqualified for 503c-6 status for extra close scrutiny. Their timing was very unfortunate and gave much fodder to dishonest political operatives in the Republican party who know that the general public hates the IRS; thus any investigation of the IRS or scrutiny of it is always a good political ploy. This, despite tax law being entirely a demon of Congresses own creation. The IRS screwed up badly, however, by even considering the idea of pre-approving any organization intending to file under 503c-6. Actually I think it is perhaps 503c-4 rather than section -6 that is relevant here. I took the -6 from the link but I think it's a mistake in that article. It should be 503c-4.
