Woods... regardless of who wins at East Lake and/or Fedex cup. Even if Scott or Mickelson wins, that would be only 3 wins (each a major, of course)... but Woods has 5 wins, including the Players. In addition, Woods will have Money title, and Vardon trophy. "Majors" are significant in the eyes of the golf world... but they don't "trump everything". And the Fedex cup is a phony, EOY year contrivance... a good thing for sure... but a win in one of the playoff events has about the same weight as FIVE REGULAR TOUR WINS... seriously?? ONE playoff win = 5 other wins? Not in my book.
I thought i read somewhere that there were five guys that, if they won, would win the whole thing. Have not followed it all that closely so i don't know for sure.
"The whole thing", as you put it is really Fedex Cup prize, only. If any of the top five in Fedex cup points wins the Tour Championship, the will have enough points to win the Fedex and claim the $10 MM bonus which goes along with it. However, the "Fedex Cup" is really a year-end gimmick to keep the tour season alive for 5 more weeks than it used to be. Bonus money aside, one win is just one win, IMV. Top honors to Player Of The Year goes (or should go) to the one who performed the best over the year... not just the last 4 (and especially the last ONE) event(s).
I think i'd rather have the Fedex Cup and ten million than Player of the Year and no money. But that's just me.
If Mickelson or Scott wins the Tour Championship this weekend at East Lake (whether or not that leads to the Fedex Cup) they deserve Player of the Year as they would have won a major along with two additional tournaments, one being the very prestigious Tour Championship. And in Scott's case that would mean he won 2 out of the 4 rounds of the playoffs while Woods won none. I realize Woods has won 5 tourneys throughout the year, including The Players, but here's the determining factor: Woods himself has said he would trade all 5 of his wins this year for 1 major. :eek:
