Curious if anyone knows what just hit Paypal? I've been selling calls against my position for a long while now, and actually thought I was about to get taken out, or have to roll, but looks like that won't be an issue.
This one intrigued me. Why the f would PYPL want PINS? Now, there is one thing I know.... those cats that run Paypal... we're talking some serious smart pro's that know this game well. They don't spend that kind of cheese without a plan. So what's the plan? Pintrest is ok, but it's by no means a cash-cow. Hmmm. Pure speculation here, but they may be concocting a cross between ETSY, DIBS, and perhaps even Christies Auction House. Whatever they're doing, it's not gonna be Pinterest as we know it today. The play? Keep an eye on ETSY. It's not too far away from an all-time high either. $233 It may be a good short. Those so called Paypal Mafia boys, they know how to build and monetize a website, that's for sure. Watch out Etsy... there may be some pitter-pattering of deep-pocketed feet coming up behind you. -vz
Well yeah, I mean obviously we all know that. It was Ebay that spun off PayPal, not the other way around. It was brilliant move, created huge value, but that was like 8 or 9 years ago. A lot of things have changed, and more change is coming ever faster. Paypal is a fintech, Pinterest is in many ways a social media operation. Sort of. My guess is Paypal doesn't want to be left behind as our culture continues to morph into a digital social existence. I suppose they could just leave things as they are and mine the data of Pinterest users to identify emerging consumer trends, but I gotta think they have more grandiose plans. Either way, I think it's a safe bet to say Etsy is feeling a tad uneasy on the heals of this development. I would if I were them.
PayPal has made a $45 billion offer to acquire Pinterest. www.moneycontrol.com/news/technology/paypal-makes-a-45-billion-offer-to-buy-pinterest-7609091.html
I closed my call and took a partial position off(over half). I have been in this one since late 2015, so I'm ok to take some off, now have to figure what to put the cash into. Having a hard time seeing values in the market at the moment. Maybe use it for some equity daytrading.
