The questions come up -- was this patient on the vaccine or the placebo? What was the cause of death and is it related to the vaccine after medical review? This would normally cause a pause in the trial -- but I don't know the process in Brazil.

  2. Study has not been halted as far as I can tell.

Which means 1)reports that it was a placebo patient are true. 2) or other obvious cause has been identified, or 3) someone slipped the regulators a sixpack and some american dollars.

  3. I don't think this specific incident is the big issue... it's more "should everybody be vaccinated quickly"... even if "the vaccine may be harmful but hasn't been tested enough to know that and/or how harmful"?

There are many stories about "harmful (even lethal) vaccines" these days. I don't think people should merely "trust the government or big pharma" on this. Vaccines have the potential to be political tools.

Personally... I plan to never take another vaccine for the rest of my life. Sure, I got lots of them as a child and in the military.... but that was when they were for disease prevention and had a history of effectiveness/safety. Today we have to be concerned about the "political potential/dangers of vaccines rushed into use and imposed upon the public". This notion of "government mandates everybody gonna' get vaccinated as soon as one comes on the market"... as in Brasil.... is about as stupid and reckless as anything I've ever heard!

If you are over 50 YO, you should definitely consider the Shingles vaccine. That's a nasty one, and easily preventable. (Unless you've never had chicken pox. Then no need.)

  5. Well, I dunno. I have a doctor friend who got the shingles vaccine and ended up with something akin to Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Follow-up... this will not be an issue for the trial. The volunteer was taking the placebo and not the vaccine.

Volunteer, 28, in trial of Oxford Uni vaccine dies ‘of Covid-19 after taking placebo’
Dr João Pedro Feitosa has been named and pictured in local media as it is revealed he was in the placebo group of the AstraZeneca clinical trial of the Covid-19 vaccine, being co-developed by Oxford University

The volunteer who died in a clinical trial of the Oxford University Covid-19 vaccine has been named as Dr João Pedro Feitosa.

The 28-year-old medic, pictured in local media, was taking part in AstraZeneca's trial in Brazil, and was not given the vaccine but a benign placebo, it has been revealed tonight.

It is reported Dr Feitosa died from complications from coronavirus while taking part in the trial of the potential vaccine, but the pharmaceutical giant would not comment on his death.

AstraZeneca is developing the vaccine with Oxford University in the UK.

Local news site Diario do Nordeste reports Dr Feitosa was a recently graduated Brazilian doctor who lived in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil's health authority, Anvisa, was reportedly told of the death on Monday. It said testing would continue in the trial.

Sources close to the trial said Dr Feitosa had not been given the vaccine, but a benign placebo, the Sun reports. It remains unclear how he contracted the bug.

Neither Anvisa nor AstraZeneca would comment on the specifics of the case, and Oxford University earlier said there were no concerns around the trial.

Anvisa said in a statement: "In relation to the death of the Oxford vaccine testing volunteer, Anvisa was formally informed of this fact on October 19, 2020.
