Open carry children’s book draws ire of left-wing ‘journalists’

HAMILTON, Mich. – Liberal media reporters are losing their minds over a children’s book meant to spark a discussion with youngsters about the 2nd Amendment, self defense, and open carry laws.

My Parents Open Carry is written by the co-founders of Michigan Open Carry, Inc. – a nonprofit that promotes open carrying of firearms for self defense – “with the open of providing a basic overview of the right to keep and bear arms as well as the growing practice of the open carry of a handgun,” according to the book’s website.

Authors Brian Jeffs and Nathan Nephew penned the children’s book about the day in the life of 13-year-old Brenna Strong and her parents, Richard and Bea, who carry handguns in public for self defense.

“We fear our children are being raised with a biased view of our constitution and especially in regards to the 2nd Amendment,” according to the site. “Before writing this, we looked for pro-gun children’s books and couldn’t find any.

“Our goal was to provide a wholesome family book that reflects the views of the majority of the American people, i.e., that self-defense is a basic natural right and that firearms provide the most efficient means for that defense.”

The children’s book, which has been out since at least 2011, is now drawing the ire of liberal writers who are doing their best to whip the public into a frenzy over My Parents Open Carry by linking the book to the “hoards of men and women” who are “walking into Applebee’s, Target and Chipolte with AK-47s.”

“Brian and Nathan decided to pen an open carry book because they ‘looked for pro-gun children’s books and couldn’t find any,’” according to eonline.com. “That’s probably because the number of gun accidents that wound or kill children each year are in the tens of thousands, which is why most authors frown upon making a firearm the star of a kid’s book.”

Instead of thoughtfully countering the ideological perspective presented in My Parents Open Carry, however, Eonline’s Jenna Mullins instead takes cheap shots at the book’s illustrator, Lorna Bergman.

“The cover was designed by someone who we assume gets off on frightening children with his or her creepy, dead-eye drawings of humans,” wrote Mullins, who obviously didn’t even bother to do a basic Google search to learn the illustrator is a woman from mid-Michigan.

“How come no one is pointing out the biggest problem with this book? What kind of parents would let their 13-year-old go out in a blouse like that?!” she questioned.

Other news sites were equally as offensive.

Vice News, for example, took a similar sarcastic tone and also included references to open carry advocates who have brought their weapons into chain stores, creating the obvious implication that the authors are nothing more than right-wing nut jobs.

“The open carry movement has been getting a lot of publicity recently. A group in Texas went to restaurants armed with rifles; chains like Jack in the Box and Chipolte subsequently adopted ‘no-gun’ policies,” Vice reporter Kayla Ruble pointed out. “An NRA News host recently floated the idea of creating areas where individuals would be required to carry guns.”

Ruble also used children’s book editor Elizabeth Law to poke fun at Jeffs and Nephew.

“Children’s book editor Elizabeth Law tweeted that ‘for the first time in my 25 years in the biz, a children’s book leaves me speechless,’” Ruble wrote. “She also noted that ‘open carry’ is not technically a verb.”

In case her bias wasn’t obvious enough, Ruble also included a distasteful image created by Rob Nelson – a friend of Law’s – that seems designed to promote fear about gun ownership.

I think it's a good idea so long as it's a subject brought up when a child is mature enough to understand it (and this is a parent's call, obviously).

My child (age 6) knows I have guns, but he is sternly restricted from entering my (locked) office and going to the (locked) closet and playing with the safe that is almost two times his height and about 500lbs.

However, sometimes he asks questions and I tell him answers - but I do so vaguely. I don't want him to fear them, but I want to make sure he understands the severity of the topic.

I'm not shocked that liberals will froth at the mouth over a book about it, and frankly I could give a rat's ass what they think.

 

Please tell us how many of those crimes were committed with legally owned firearms (since you cut out the links). Otherwise the conversation is pointless.

 

What's the difference? Adam Lanza killed the Sandy Hook 24 with a legal gun. And all guns start off legal.

 

And how many kids shoot each other with their parents' legal guns?

As for the difference, I would surely entertain a discussion on gun control if you - or any other advocate - had any suggestion on how to remove the millions of firearms out there that are illegally owned.

The problem is, you have no idea how to do this. All you know how to do is remove the legally owned ones, and that leaves us defenseless. It also does not address gun violence, which is overwhelmingly committed by criminals with illegally owned firearms.

 

That's not a gun problem, that's a safety problem. But pray tell, how many kids DO shoot each other with their parent's guns? Let's consider that number to other child related deaths and see what else we should ban!
