Does anybody use MT4 with OANDA? Any comments on this? I have been using fxTrade and am getting fed up with periodic issues. I originally had problems with the desktop launcher so I switched to the web-based browser platform. They stopped supporting that and sent out a link to download the replacement. Worked until 12 hours ago, doesn't now. Support comes up with a mish mash of stuff like Java issues and cache issues, but strangely I never have any of these issues with IB's TWS, and I always thought that was a clunker. Just want something that runs without issues so I don't have to think about it, easy order entry and stop modification, which I actually like on fxTrade. Not interested in charting beyond the basics, as I use Sierra Charts for that.
I use fxTrade on both Windows and Linux platforms without problems. I've occasionally run into problems with the launcher being out of date. All I had to do was download the latest launcher and it ran again. I used to use MT4 and as I recall you don't get the same bid/ask spread on MT4 as you do with fxTrade. Also MT4 is a native Windows application. It's possible to run on Linux and Mac but you have to jump through some hoops to do it. I'd try to chase down your java/fxTrade problems first before jumping platforms.
Hi, You can try PTMC platform via OANDA. We supported their V20 trading engine as well we have chart and mouse trading modes for convenient trading. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. https://marketplace.oanda.com/collections/frontpage/products/ptmc
Thanks Steve, I was wondering why a sub-account was needed for MT4 per the FAQ, the spread probably is why. I'll give it a day or two and see. Support sent me a link to download the standalone desktop programme, it's only 59.9Mb, but the download always fails because it's coming in at <10kBPS. I've done a speedtest to Singapore and I'm getting 30MBPS so the problem isn't at my end, but thus far they don't seem to have sorted whatever it is out. It is probably why the launcher fails currently, it needs to refresh "app jar" files each time (whatever those are), and that has failed today.
Well, managed to download the new software and it still doesn't work. Did the other stuff they suggested like clearing the Java cache. The last thing left to try that they have suggested is to delete the entire Oanda folder, restart and download and install the software. Haven't done that yet, I'm guessing the price I'll pay if that works is I'll lose all my user profile settings. Bummer. I don't understand why they are so useless with the software. I've used TWS for more than 5 years and I've never had to contact support about the software, only connection issues when there was a problem in one leg of the Internet backbone in the States. TWS is way more complicated than fxTrade, the options chains module alone makes fxTrade look like kindergarten stuff. Anyway they have a new web based version that is pretty bare bones but I can enter orders easily and drag and modify stops on the charts, so I'm using that for now.
