How safe is Manhattan now? Some of the grumblings, whispers, and what I've heard/seen: - Homeless population increasing. NYC always had homeless, but there's crowds of them now in Manhattan. - Police: Fewer in number, perhaps as a result of the "Defund the Police" efforts. I hardly saw any. - Police: After the Floyd incident, police are more reluctant to get involved. They sit back, and wait, let whatever happen, and come in after to clean up the mess. Phone cameras are pervasive. - Lots of empty spaces: storefronts, apartments, and commercial space. - Is there a bias on the streets developing towards white people? - I see a lot of people who have bailed out and moved to the suburbs (where I live). Not looking to move back any time soon. - I went to diner at lunchtime that was packed in 2019, and there were people at only one other table. I spoke with the owner and he looked like he was going to cry. - It's eerily quiet. There's still traffic on Broadway and 7th ave, but some of the avenues are just devoid of people. I went there the other day and found my spider sense tingling. I'm going back in next week for another look, but I was a little uncomfortable. Is Manhattan becoming Detroit on a massive scale?
