It really does depend on what you want to do with it.

    1. If you just want to trade it and you are non-American certain CFD brokers have it so you don't even have to own it to be able to trade it.
    2. If you want to invest in bitcoin for the long run, you can buy it locally via Craigslist for cash and keep it off the internet, on paper or in a BTC wallet.
    3. If you want to avoid taxation and maybe buy some "products" on the darknet, don't use paypal, CC or anything that can be traced back to you. Certain banks won't even let you purchase bitcoin with their cards.
    4. If a combination of the above:

  8. Every transaction is traceable in the blockchain, so yes strictly speaking.

That said, if you acquired BTC via darknet (anonymous) transactions and spent them on darknet, then you're not traceable. (Unless of course you're caught in an FBI sting and used your real life name and/or address on the darknet)

Suppose you run a clearnet web site and have a BTC address there for donations and people actually donate to it. Now that address associated with your name has a history of BTC coming in. If you spend it by sending BTC to another address published on clearnet associated with person X then it's obvious you sent BTC to person X.
