The Chinese government has been expanding its detention centres in the remote Xinjiang region, new satellite imagery reveals, despite Beijing’s claims that all detainees have "graduated" from the "re-education camps".

Research by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute also reveals the existence of newly built high-security detention centres, along with the expansion of existing facilities over the past year.

The institute used satellite imagery to compile the largest database of Xinjiang’s internment camps in existence.

The research located 380 suspected detention centres in the territory in north-west China, making it the most comprehensive data on the region’s detention system in the world.

The Chinese Communist Party maintains the "re-education centres" for the Uighur Muslim minority are needed to stamp out terrorism and provide vocational education in the region.

But the new findings revealing the extent of its internment policy come after a separate report was released this week revealing Beijing had begun forcing more than 500,000 Tibetans into labour camps - mirroring its Xinjiang program.
