I have been living in the Boston area for many years now, and I know what different jets sound like. I just heard two military planes screaming east overhead, heading to that side of the world. These were not passenger planes. (duh) What was unusual about it was how low they were, in that I could hear how low they were. Casual military flights heading overseas are normally heard with barely a whisper. These were loud! It made me think they wanted to go supersonic the moment they left flying over land, which they prolly' did. Anyone got a scoop?
It is possible it was one of the military demonstration teams out practicing for an upcoming show. Or if you have a practice area for military exercises off the coast they might have been heading out to it. Or always the possibility that some moron violated airspace and they are heading for an intercept. Military jets can go afterburner without going supersonic, but are loud as hell. I remember long ago an F-111 lighting the afterburners taking off while I was working at an airport, and it was deafening, and shook the concrete where I was standing. It was after an Armed Forces Day display at the local Guard base. All the planes were allowed to light up and show off for people at the airport. F***ing incredible!
