North Carolina's largest political donor and three others, including the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, have been arrested on bribery charges.

Greg Lindberg, two of his business associates and N.C. GOP Chairman Robin Hayes were all indicted last month, but the indictments were unsealed Tuesday. They turned themselves in to the FBI in Charlotte Tuesday as well and had first appearances before a U.S. magistrate.

They're all accused of trying to bribe state Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey, who recorded conversations and worked with the FBI to expose an alleged scheme that would have traded more than $1 million in political contributions in exchange for regulatory help at the department. Hayes, a former congressman and GOP candidate for governor, is also charged with three counts of making false statements to the FBI.

On Monday, he announced that he wouldn't seek another term as chairman of the state Republican Party.

Lindberg has given more than $5 million to North Carolina political campaigns over the last few years, including more than $1.49 million to the state Republican Party. The state party turned around and gave $250,000 to Causey's campaign, and the indictment alleges this was an attempt to get around state political contribution limits.

Causey signed that money over to the U.S. Marshals Service last year.

Republican Party officials have not responded to repeated requests for comment, but state party Executive Director Dallas Woodhouse tweeted that the party is aware "of the developments today in Charlotte" and will respond soon.

The indictment describes a number of clandestine meetings, at least some of which Causey recorded. The two other men indicted, John Gray, one of Lindberg's consultants, and John Palermo, a vice president at Lindberg's Eli Global business, coordinated a number of these meetings.

Before one, in February of 2018 at the Concord Regional Airport in Charlotte, Gray told Causey that he and Lindberg would enter through a different door "so that nobody would see them together," the indictment states.

Causey later met with Palermo at a closed restaurant in Chapel Hill, and Palermo suggested the commissioner hire him at the department. The group also allegedly wanted Causey to fire or re-assign a deputy commissioner causing problems for some of the businesses Lindberg owns, which are regulated by DOI.

Gray allegedly told Causey that if this deputy commissioner wasn't fired, he should "set it so that ... she doesn't breathe a word outside that office, or send a slip of paper outside that office, that is not reviewed first by John (Palermo)," the indictment states.

This is a breaking news item and will be updated.

Put them on trial, and then lock them up for a long period of time.

  4. How about a little compassion here. The man was just trying to make a better life for himself and his family.

I'm impressed that the FBI has plenty of manpower for cases like this but just can't seem to get a handle on who is organizing and financing those migrant caravans and how it is that they all know just what to say to get past the asylum officer. It's almost like they were being coached by crooked immigration lawyers ro something, but I guess it never occurred to the geniuses at the FBI to plant some undercover agents to record that and bust those dirtbags.
